Looks like the Loch Ness Monster, for all of me...

Back over on the Toad Suck, Arkansas River, I was fishing late one evening about a hunnerd years ago...building up a fire, I noticed a long black stick lying a few feet outside the fire circle...going to collect it, the light reflected off a snowy white mouth...opened up about a foot wide. That critter had to be 8 feet long...or near enough to it for MY bulging eyes.....

He made a pass towards me...but was slipping in some brown stuff. I gave him the sandbar...went back early the next morning for my gear.
Ain't a BIT ashamed to admit it, either...
Never went near that river again without some snake medicine....at least .22, and oftimes bigger pills...

Water snakes have some odd-ball colorations. The one in the picture looks like a Blotched Water Snake. Another common water snake in Texas is the Banded Water snake, and they also have some very different colorations.

That ain't nothin'..I was standing by a corral out in Western Kansas jawing with a couple rancher friends..back in another lifetime...we were ..actually THEY were..talking about how big rattlesnakes get out there on the prarie..when One casuly mentioned that there was one by my boot...
NATURALLY...I laughed..till I looked down and saw the biggest rattlesnake a man had the misforture to EVER see..coiled up by my left boot...

I cleared the fence..and several innocent steers that had wandered up to see if we were going to feed them...talk about BIG eyes...them steers just purely wern't used to seeing 6 foot humans flying over their heads..screaming....

Mt 'buddies' were lying about in various states of helplesssness..laughing their fools heads off.....naturally, it was one of the common variety of bull snakes that seem to delight in coloring themselves JUST like a rattlesnake out there....

SHEESH...reckon I will never forget it...

My brother and I had chased one under the house. Mike was trying to position himself so he could see if it was near the opening or if it had moved on towards the center of the house. He finally got down on the ground and eased his head towards the opening when my dad pulled a rattler out of his pocket and started shaking it.

Never saw someone move so fast in my life! We never did find the snake.[:D]

    Neat.
Would have had a shortened life near me. I really do not like snakes.
Friend in Alabama shot one that fell in boat with us. With his 38. Made three holes in the boat.
I almost died from the shock of the close by shots and then the laughter.

Wife called me on the cell phone a few years ago. She had encountered a snake on the way to the dog pen. Informed me that she had killed the snake and I was expected to remove the body of the deceased when I got home.

Got home a few hours later and went to clean up the body. She had chopped this snake, turns out it was a green grass snake, into a few dozen small parts. Used an ax on it.

Asked her why did she use the ax, its a little on the heavy side, machete was right beside it and a lot easier to swing. She informed me that the handle on the machete wasn't long enough for her.

Arond here if I encounter a snake unexpectley and up close, my first reaction is to kill it, right away. If I see one at a distance and have a few seconds to think and realize that most snakes really are beneficial, I will let it go about its business. Heck was up in the attic a couple of months ago, must be a few dozen black snake skins up there. As long as we have them in the house, no rats, mice or other snakes such as copper heads.

A snake will startle me if I unexpectedly walk up on them. I usually let them go on their way unless the get aggressive with me. If I'm mowing, I will stop so they can get out of the way. My wife is the same way.

This pic just sends chills up my back. Water snakes are the worst. My next worst fear is small fast land snakes. Well any fast snakes.
We have them around here with yellowist/orange bottoms. I don't know what those are but last time I seen one I puckered so hard I cut my thong in two.

I was standing on devils canyon in the Red River gorge leaned up against the old wooden posts just enjoying the view when I felt something brush my shoe I looked down and there was a copperhead checking me out. I ran straight backwards with my eyes fixated on the snake I came to an abrupt stop about four feet back, thank God the posts were on the backside of me as well otherwise I would've ran off of a 250' cliff. That damn snake almost made me kill myself!

I will never forget that. I am not really scared of snakes I used to play with garter snakes as a kid all the time.

I love spiders too, My ol lady HATES!! spiders and wants me to kill everyone I see, but I wont. Once there was a MASSIVE and I mean MASSIVE! wolf spider in the house this thing had a body as big around as a nickel not counting how long its feet were. Anyways she wanted me to kill it so I grabbed an old pickle jar and rounded him up took him outside and tossed him in some brush. I can't kill spiders! they eat mosquitoes and flies therefor spiders are a good friend of mine. I have seen tons of wolf spiders but this one here must've been granddaddy's daddy it was a monster wolf spider. I will never forget that spider, I had some amazing pictures of him while he was in the jar but I have no idea what happened to them.
