Scopes on the Garand

I was recently at a shop that had a lot of Garands for sale.
There was one rack that had dozens of these rifles with military scope mounts on the left side.
These were a solid rail type mount. None of these rifles had scopes mounted.

All of these guns with the scope mount were 3 times higher than the other guns. Some of these were over $3,000.

Why are these guns so valuable?

Those would have been M1C Rifles which were the first attempts to use the M1 Rifle as a sniper platform. Genuine M1Cs are extremely rare as all of the rifles were pulled from a specific Springfield Armory WWII serial number range and sent off for modification. Without spending eight pages covering he subject of M1 sniper rifles and boring everyone to death; the later M1D sniper rifles were converted at depot level from any makers M1 and produced during any time period. Because of this, as well as their use of a much simplified scope mount with did not involve drilling e receiver (the mount attached to the barrel), the M1D is much more common and valued less. Owning a documents and unmolested M1C with all of it's equipment is the goal of many M1 collectors....But not me, I have no interest in the things.

This photo shows a decommissioned M1C with it's receiver holes filled in so that it could be issued once again as a standard service rifle. These "plugged" M1s, if they are in the correct M1C serial number block, are extremely rare and desired by collectors, almost as much as the actual sniper rifles.

I will speak for myself; Mark, I do not think you could bore me with your knowledge of the M1.

    Thank you!

My Uncle Don gave me this one when I left my home town. I now know it is tapped for the scope.

$3000 would have been a good price if the documentation was with it. I sold a perfect parts still in wrappers documented M1D on GB many years ago for over 5K
