While not gifted, I am a reasonable resourceful guy with plenty of tools at my disposal, and sometimes I get free time at work.
How do you make a knife?

What would be a good way to get information on how to do it?
Im guessing a good book. Anybody know of one?
I would love to take a community college course for it.
I would also love to take a course in gunsmithing. I could make some extra money making triggers smoother and polishing the feed ramps and things like that.
Any ideas?
I have watched a bunch of his videos. He seems very knowledgeable to me....not that I am an expert, but videos are such that even I can understand them.
He also has links to a bunch of others' sites and videos.
I am interested, also, but don't have the room or time to start anything right now.
You'd be further ahead making/selling knives.
I tripped over a book on knife making/etching the blades back in '77. The real eye opener for me was the author made knives from discarded sawmill blades (and there was a Sawmill in the family)
I kick my self from time to time because I didn't buy it and have no idea what the title is/was.
Edit: A course in Metallurgy wouldn't be a bad place to start.
Look for Walter Sorrells on youtube.

He is a great teacher and one smart dude.
After that there is heat treating, tempering, sharpening, making/adding scales (handles). You can spend a bunch on power tools, or use a vise, a file, and a lot of your life.
Have made a few to see if I could, was pleased with outcome. Not showpieces, but functional blades. Made a few from worn chrome molly power hacksaw blades, Think they could chop a railroad rail in half. Leave teeth on back of blade to get a hell of a fish scaler.
I?ve probably made 15 or so, there is a lot of good and bad videos out there as well as good and bad info. You kinda gotta wade out into it and give it a try, there are many people out there willing to help or point you in the right direction.
As mentioned previously are you interested in forging or stock removal?
I have made a few knives that came out pretty good. What I could not make, and admire the people that can,is a nice leather fancy sheath.
That man would be Mr.Trinity Scrimshaw. Awesome leather work..[^]
