I have a small red maple in the front yard right in front of my front porch, and beside/over a small fishpond. We fought a robin all spring who was trying to build in the awning of my backporch, she finally went to the front yard a built a nest in the red maple. She lost a couple eggs a month or so back as I found them in the pond broken.

I was just sitting out front got done cleaning the pond from all the maple seeds/pollen. Had a cardinal swoop in on me twice and jump around the small maple, maybe 15ft tall. My question is I haven't seen the robin in a few weeks, I wonder if the cardinal would chase her off and take over the nest? or are cardinal eggs blue like a robin? the two cardinal definately didn't want me sitting on the porch that close to the nest, just thought it was odd....

Cardinals generally aren't very aggressive, but I've seen them chase Blue Jays when they've gotten too close to their nest. We have a Japanese Maple just outside of our Laundry Room window and Cardinals seem to like it because they nest there every year. This year's young fledged two days ago. Cardinal eggs are somewhat speckled. Here is a description I found:

"The eggs are white, with a tint of green, blue or brown, and are marked with lavender, gray, or brown blotches which are thicker around the larger end."

If you can't feel the music; it's only pink noise!

If she lost eggs a month or so back and there are still blue eggs in the nest, she either abandoned the nest or perhaps was killed. Maybe there is a second nest the cardinals are using? Robins often bring off two broods a year.

After the chick hatches, a robin will carry the egg pieces some distance away -- to make the nest site less obvious. So finding broken egg shells doesn't mean the brood failed.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

no there was yolk on the rocks in the water... and the shells were blue, maybe she just moved on and the cardinals moved in, not sure either way, but they sure don't like me sitting there......[;)]
