Many cops need to learn that an SKS is not an AK47

I was watching this episode of Crime 360 the other day on A&E, and the cops on the scene found some 7.62x39 shell casings. One cop was convinced that an "automatic AK-47" was involved... he must have said AK-47 about 50 times during the episode. You'd think that he was getting paid $100 by some anti-gun group each time he said AK47, that's how many times he said it. Each time he said "we need to get this AK-47 off the streets" or "the AK-47 serves no purpose but for killing" or something just as stupid, I cringed. Well, later in the episode, they get a call that, "a guy has been found shooting off an AK-47", and they have taken his gun for testing. So then they go to the local outdoor shooting range to do some ballistic testing (because the gun was, "too high power for their lab", and what is it that they are test firing... an SKS... semi-auto at that... and he keeps calling it an AK-47, and the guy that he says is the "expert firearms person on the force" is standing right there and doesn't even bother to correct him. You'd think that cops would know the difference. Sheesh... maybe they should hire some of us to teach them about guns. Also, the gun that was found and taken from the guy that was shooting it off was not a match for the crime weapon.

ive never killed any body with my hi-powered ak or sks.i see the mistake alot around here on the local news except it usually involes a"hi powered" semi automatic pistol when in actuality it was just a revolver. ive never had no trouble telling the difference nor does my six year old son.

Media needs lessons too. Almost all news storys it was ak-47 even if it was a single shot

...same as a "twin engined piper cub"..

...Same as "a veritable arsenal, hundreds of rounds, and several weapons'....

Truth no longer is even in their conscience.

It would probably also happen if they found some 5.56 brass. Someone might assume it was from an M-16 or AR when it could just as easy have been from a Mini-14 or a bolt action.

There are firearms recognition guides, with photos, that are printed and distributed to law enforcement. Most of these end up in ofcrs lockers.

Why not contact A&E and point out how inaccurate the info in their story was?

My problem is I can recognize more gun profiles than I can cars. I don't know squat about cars as far as makes and models go, except for maybe the high profile Mustangs and sech.

Don't know a Camaro from a Firebird at a distance.

But then I'm the exception around here.

Several years ago, a local law enforcement agency called me and asked me to come over and check out a firearm they had taken in a
    search warrant arrest.

I arrived and found they had an AK clone. They wanted to know if it was a full auto. I showed the officers where the safety was, unloaded it and explained how it would have looked if it were full auto.

Luckily we don't run into too many of these in the hands of criminals in my neck of the woods. But they do seem to pop up once in a while.

Ak sounds more dynamic I guess. There are lots of stupid folks out there, some with badges on even.

I had an officer once that recovered a mac in 380 (I don't know if thats the right model for that) He was fixin to pull the trigger to get the bolt to drop, it was loaded and the type that fired from an open bolt. I took it away from him and put it in my trunk. Would have shot all of us.

The best one I've read lately? AOL made a big deal about some movie star with $10,000.00 worth of guns. Evidently they never tried buying a good shotgun or a 1st generation Colt SAA.
