Anybody Here Eat "Gas Station" Food?

My best memories of gas station cuisine were the 5 cent candy bars, 10 cent Coke's, and dime bags of potato chips!

Stations sure have come a long way since those days! I go into a Speedway and watch the greasy looking, spinning sausages and hot dogs on the rotisserie as I wait in line to pay nearly 2 bucks for my Coke!

Also noticed the taco chips and the hot cheesy sauce displayed atop the stainless steel counter.

Never been that hungry in my entire life and after reading this article, thankfully so!

There's a Shell station just south of nM550 on the way to Northern Rio Rancho that has excellent posole, great red chile pork tamales, and some of the best green chile stew around.
There's also a Valero station in Hatch that makes burritos fresh when you order, has real chorizo in the Breakfast Burritos, and will use whichever heat of Chile you want.
I was at a gas station near Manchester, Tennessee this year that served full lunches, BBQ Ribs/brisket/chicken, and had little packets on the counter. The packets were next to the toothpick holder, which was next to the cash register. I thought it was one of those impulse buy schemes until I saw what was in that pickle packet. Pig lips! For only 85?!
There was a gas station across the freeway from Doolittle Road near Rolla (by Burns Army Surplus), that sold Frito Pie!
If you've never had the scrumptious delight known as Frito pie; here's how to make it.
Chop some onion into a bowl.
Cover with Chile (or chili, if you can't find the real thing).
Stir in a handful of original Fritos.
Top with shredded cheese & enjoy.

Gas station food; you can live on it if you choose wisely!

Very seldom and even then absolutely nothing close to perishable. Even check the dates on the chips or candy bars.
Way back when, a local gas station owner would buy "expired" chips, candy bars, or whatever to sell at his station figuring that all the locals already knew his racket and the travelers wouldn't bother coming back to complain.

I eat at truck stops about 6 days a week.
Usually I get some burritos at Taco Bell, or chile at Wendys.

I have eaten my share of those hot dogs cooking at in the trays, and they are good.
There is a little truck stop in the Cajun district of La. which has a good restaurant, and I have had sit-down meals there a half dozen times, crawfish etouffe. MMMMMM good.

But, that restaurant has a "warming tray" out in the store by the cash register, they have some burritos and egg rolls there.
One night about 9:30 pm I bought 2 egg rolls.
I got very sick. Nausea vomiting diarrhea. Couldn't drive the truck the next day and really should have taken 4 days off.
I didn't get over that for two months. I don't know what it was, food poisoning, botulism, salmonella or what, but it was bad.

So, that is it for me with the warming trays at the little mom n pop truck stops, they are just not careful enough with the food.

I never have eaten any of that nacho cheese, although it is found at almost every truck stop.

In Louisiana some the of the best chow can be found at Gas stations.

If You are ever driving between Alexandria LA and Leesville LA, about half way is a place called Ray's Fina station. Their lunch plate is the best.

They serve one meal each day. On Friday they have Catfish, Monday is red beans and rice. I cannot remember the other days but the Chicken and dumplings are to die for.

You just go in and sit down and they will bring it to you.

    I miss LA

Tom's peanuts in a Pepsi, yeah.
Square nabs and a Dr Pepper.
    TruAde and Lance Malt Crackers.

There, you have breakfast, lunch and dinner, all three food groups.[:D]

Correction: When I was 8-10 years old, there was a little Esso station down town. In one corner, no more than 6x8 feet, was a hot dog stand. Had those glass windows you ordered thru from outside. I don't know if Ollie even sold anything except hot dogs. That's all I ever got there. I might have weighed 50 lbs. then, but I could eat 6 hotdogs..and there has never been a better one than those. At least as far as my memory goes.[:D]

No. Maybe a bag of pretzels, chips or a SEALED drink. just looking at those nasty hot dogs on the rollers turns my stomach.

In the 70's I worked in a gas station that sold sandwiches we heated in a little oven with a hot light bulb!
Some of the large gas stations are like a sit down/fast food restaurant/convenience/auto/truck/marine parts/toys/deli/liquor store/casino/dry cleaning/produce/hardware stores.

Got egg rolls at a place in the Northern Territories one night on a death adder hunt that were actually pretty darn good. And we caught death adders and a king brown along with a few other goodies. Good ju-ju I reckon.

    Otherwise, "Are you nuts?!"

When I was a lot younger, there was a local gas station that had those rotisserie sausages. I usually went in there late at night, after an evening of carousing. Always picked the most dried out ones, and covered them with horseradish, on a bun, of course. Might not like them today, but I sure have fond memories of them!

    Peace

I also remember a Texaco station here in Michigan had one of the first micro wave ovens and sold STEWART SANDWICHES there!

One of the sandwiches was called THE CHUCKWAGON and boy was it tasty!

I also realize that the modern gas station has gone from gas, auto repair, parts, SERVICE, to "convenience" and is long in the tooth from what it used to be.

There is a Barney Castle station nearby that is like going to the fair with a lot of fine eats!

They roll out fresh Pizza and Subs along with bbq ribs and many really fine baked goods daily.

I call that very busy place a GOLD MINE!

The secret to avoid eating bad food is to buy from a busy business during their busy season.

Man Dies After Eating Gas Station's Nacho Cheese Sauce

Saw that on the local news the other night as Gehl Foods is a local company. With that being said I still like Speedways egg rolls and Kwik Trips Cheddar brats. [:)][:)]

Gas stations supposedly don't earn any money off fuel sales because the competition is too intense. They have to make it up on other stuff.

    God...

All of our Cumberland farms are long gone.

We had a regional flagship store and a training center - hiring office in our hometown.

I grew up riding my bike to one all summer long as a kid.

7-11 and wawa killed them off.

I did not realize they still existed.

At least here in Ct, they are going up everywhere and they're huge

    Great rippled potato chips.
