Got some fresh beets today.
How do I prepare them?
They will be for my wife and daughter. I hate em.

Start with a trash can and throw them in! I don't like beets either! [xx(]

    how do you prepare them?

    1) Get new trash bag.
    2) throw them in.
    3) pour Kerosene where you got them from
    4) accidentally throw a cigarette there.

    Grandma boils them I think.

    I found this:

Doesn't mention sugar but I bet that does make them taste better.

    Peel, slice and boil works.

I think you get better flavor this way:

Wash, toss them in the oven at about 375F for 45-90 minutes (dry...no oil necessary), depending on size (really big ones might take longer). Use a fork to probe them and when they are the right consistency--about twice as tough as a properly cooked potato--all the way through, they're done. Then peel and enjoy. But be forewarned, if they're red beets, peeling them is a messy business and you'll probably stain your clothing.

Beets are delicious. Anybody who says otherwise is nuts.

You might like them with butter, but I can't see putting sugar on them. After all, beets are one of the major sources of refined sugar in your grocery! They're sweet already.

Slice beets -- boil -- drain
chop 3 slices of bacon and brown till crisp
then pour in 1/4 cup vinegar and 1/2 stick
    of butter --
pour mixture over beets and enjoy --
    Beet are great ---
It is best if you can get beets that are the size
of a nickel to a quarter and leave to tops on --
then they are really tender and have a sweet taste--
    Good Lickin and enjoy

    3 quarts water
    1 cup sour cream
    2 Tbsp. flour
    1 bay leaf
    1 tsp. salt
    1 large beets, peeled sliced
    2 lb. beef soup bones
    2 Tbsp. sugar
    3 Tbsp. vinegar
    boiled potatoes

Place soup bones, beets, salt, bay leaf with 3 quats water and cook for 1 hour. let stand until cool.

Remove beets and soup bones. Discard bones. Blend together in a blender beets, sour cream, sugar, flour and vinegar. Add to cooled stock. Bring to a boil and the flour will thicken mixture. Serve with potatoes, hard boiled eggs, and sliced of kielbasa.

Heh, heh...so do I (collect old cookbooks)...and I've got some really old ones and crack up every time I see that 'smidgin, 2 dashes and a handful'!!

I've got some from way BB (Before Bob), back at the turn of the century. Some of the ingredients I've never even heard of...or are impossible to get.

yep, some of them are available we just call it something else, mostly spices, and some cuts of meats are named different, the one i mention i got when i was 7 was already very old when i got it, i lost the bindings years ago so i have no ideal how old it is, i've been searching for another one for years at fleamarkets and yard sales, it was green about 4 inches thick, i have found a few like it but not identical, it has some cool old photos, meat charts, how to build things like smokers and roots cellars, and recipes for opossum, and dandelion flower whine

I like em cold and sliced with good olive oil and salt and pepper. Beet tops are about the most tasty greens imho. But afterwards, umm you know, it looks like you have major internal bleeding. [:0] [:(] [:)]
