My son's 11U team has the first spring tournament this weekend. Our second game was 7:00 tonight. 4th inning, Louis, one of the players, was pitching and was down to the last out of the inning. He strikes the player out, but the catcher misses the ball and it goes to the backstop. He goes to get it, and of course Louis comes in to cover home because the 3rd base runner is coming home due to the batter stealing first. The catcher throws the ball to Louis, who appeared to be getting lower, either intentionally to make the tag, or he stumbles slightly. Anyway, his glove wasn't high enough[B)] The ball struck him in the mouth, maybe 25feet from where the catcher threw it to him.
I saw something fly from his mouth and hoped to god that was just spit, but I knew it wasn't, from the sound of the impact. 4 or 5 seconds of a stunned look, and then came the cries. Blood running all over the plate, and his pants, through his fingers that were over his mouth. One of our player's father is a PA, and he was immediately on the field.
His opinion, that aside from an adult eye tooth knocked clean out, and a lip split completely through, is that he thinks the bone that holds those front top teeth in, is broken, as he stated is was shoved back when he looked at it. Louis was still crying with the blood covered bag of ice over his mouth as he was going to the hospital. He kept saying "I shouldn't pitch, I shouldn't pitch, I shouldn't pitch"[:(][V]
Please pray not only for his recovery from a physical injury, but for him to overcome his fear of ever pitching again, and that he will still want to come back and play again. He is a good kid, very polite. I just told him at this morning's game that he made a great catch in the outfield, and he replied "thank you" to me for saying that.
Coach was at the ER last night and told us that they had re-set the tooth and stitched the lip. Whether the tooth holds is anyone's guess at this point. One of the other kids mother, works in radiology. She isn't supposed to say so until the doc looks at the Xrays, but she said today that she doesn't believe the bone holding those teeth in place was fractured. Supposedly the dentist/oral surgeon will be taking another look tomorrow. My wife made a "get well" card out of a full sized sheet of poster board, with pictures and the whole nine yards. All of the players and coaches signed the card and wrote very nice messages to Louis. We will wait to hear any more.
Rough spot to be in.
Jon
He is going to need to 'get back on the horse', and it is going to be a challenge to help him do that.
Please tell him that we cannot let our fears rule our lives.
Sports injuries are common, but it sounds like he really got it bad. I'm very sorry. Prayers sent.

This may help to make your son feel better and stronger - I hope.
Good luck.
Please post an update when you are able.
