Meet Slake - J&G Surplus M1A Bush Rifle

drobsdrobs Member Posts: 22,620 ✭✭✭✭
edited October 2013 in General Discussion
I had been looking for a M1A Scout / Bush rifle to replace my Std M1A for awhile. J&G sales had surplus Police Trade in Bush rifles for $1217 shipped. I took a crap shoot and here's what arrived.

My "new" M1A already has it's own name. Meet Slake:

9391062520_0ccc4b3850_b.jpg

Looks to be a GI Fiberglass stock that had been repainted. I can see brown under the black finish. The SN puts the gun into March of 2002 so most likely no GI parts other than the stock.

I like it. Not sure when I'll see it in person. If all goes well I might be home soon. I have GI trigger assy, ammo, and mags for it.

    Nice.

Warning though, those are very loud. I was shooting next to a guy who had one and it was ringing by bell, even with ear plugs and muffs on.

I plan on replacing that muzzle brake with a Vortex flash hider.
I had a 16" FAL with a muzzle brake that really annoyed the shooters around me.

Isn't the flash hider integral with the front sight? My M1A is that way but its a frankin gun with all military parts and a old milled Smith receiver.

That is a nice looking gun and I hope it shoots good for you.

Another question, do you handload? If so are you going to try fast burning powder like maybe H322, AA2015BR or Benchmark. I tried IMR 3031 and it never shot as well as 4895. I have not experimented with Benchmark yet but I plan on it. I don't shoot My M1A much anymore and do most of my 308 shooting with a 308 bolt gun a 700P with the 26" barrel. It would be fun working up a round that performs in the 16.5" barrel.

    Enjoy the rifle!

    Here's the smith vortex FH:
    2002V.01.jpg

I haven't reloaded in about 4 years now. Had just started loading 45acp for about a year before going overseas. Haven't got into rifle reloading yet. Though I was actually just looking at primed 7.62 LC brass the other day.

I still have a couple K of Berdan S.African, W.German, and South American 7.62x51 rounds. Was looking on that Powder Valley website and see that carry Berdan primers. Might need to start collecting my "non-reloadable" brass.

This is an image I pulled off of a Google search, but it's what my next M1A is going to be:

That birch M14 stock set really transformed the rifle.

Looks nice. I like that style of sling too.

I see you went with a standard M14/M1A1 flash suppressor instead of the Vortex style.

Thanks Mark. Got a pair of stocks and the vented hand guards from Fred's M14 Stocks. This is his $35 Excellent but dinged stock:
    http://www.fredsm14stocks.com/Standard-and-Inexpensive-M14-Rifle-Stocks_c14.htm?page=all
I'd read some bad reviews of long shipping times but I had tracking and the stock in a week. So no complaints from me.

    Thanks

This is a bit a of a 1/2 way step. One of these days I'll invest some $ in sound suppressors. When and if that happens I'll get one of the other more expensive suppressor compatible Vortex Flash Hiders.

SLAKE? I've been on that lake. It's fed by S. Creek.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Looks like an excellent shooter Springfield. The new furniture is also top notch.
    Great weapon!!
The word slake means to "satiate". As in.

Haven't decided yet. Might get a fake selector doodad or glass it later. Will eventually refinish this stock.

I'm stripping a Fred's $25 Vietnam Bad condition stock right now.

After stripping her down to a barreled action, I gave her some Hoppes #9 perfume, greased her up, put on the pretty new clothes and test fired 5rds through her.

Going to a formal range later this week.

So kindof like Jake with a Sl got it
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.
