Reefer unit/climate control in a box van ???

My boss just just purchased an E550 van with an 18 foot box which we will be using to haul live chickens from Central Texas to the Los Angeles area and I have to figure out a way to keep the poultry from getting too hot while I roll down I10.
The roof of the box is fiberglass and not real sturdy so I don't want to mount anything on top.
I need to keep the temp inside in the seventies.
The plan is to build a small sleeper cab area into the front of the box so I need to use some type of ductwork to carry the air back toward the center of the cargo area, or are reefer units all ductless? Can I get something like a residential mini split system and just pipe freon from the condenser inside to an evaporator unit?
If anyone knows anything about reefers I could use some insight.

i ran a power inverter to a window unit once, worked great

now they have stand alone unit with exhaust ducts like a dryer

a reefer unit will need a power supply, most trucks run a generator to power them, and none of that is cheap, you may consider insulation as well

Yeah I just started looking at those stand alone units. That may be the most effective use of the bosses money.

Roll the windows down and drive 80mph. We used to call that "2-80 A/C"...

Check into the Carrier Supra line of reefer units.

Small reminder. Whatever unit you go with it must be California compliant.

Throw a couple bags of ice back there. Way cheaper then a reefer. Maybe a couple cans of Bud, just in case you break down, this way the chickens will have something to drink. And they call us Yankees stupid[:o)][:D]

    Yep. That's what folks ask.
In California they get put on an airplane and sent to the Philippines, or sometimes Australia.
Supposedly the climate here is similar to the Philippines so our birds do well there. We've done several trips with an Excursion full of fancy adult birds (stinky, loud, and altogether unpleasant) and we recently got a contract to send 6,000 6-8 week old egg production type birds. This all seems insane to me, but I get a check out of it so I'm game. I'm just glad the boss bought somethin' to haul in where the birds aren't usin' the same air as me.

You're going to import livestock into California ?

Sounds like someone has all the experience with reefer they need.

They always ask if we've got any fruits or vegetables when we get to the checkpoint (Your papers please), but haven't given us any trouble with the birds. We've got the necessary paperwork just incase.

The thing I hate is that I'm supposed to lock my gun up so tight I might as well not have it with me. My dad bought me a cheap telescoping baton which at least would give me an edge over a knife, but it turns out those are more illegal than a handgun in CA. So I guess I'm gonna start keeping a 20" long box-end wrench in the door incase I need to adjust some really large nuts. [;)]

H&H Poultry. Not a real big operation. They've been around for at least 10 years. Started out doing backyard free range eggs then moved to a lot of expensive show birds and hatching eggs and about a year ago started selling to Philippines.

For only 70?, I'd use a camper A/C unit on top. The commercial unit's from Carrier or Thermo King are way overkill for what you need.

The PI are NUTS about chickens.

Friend of mine has been selling these fancy chicken eggs to them for $100 PER EGG!

He just got a check for $3600 a few weeks ago......for 3 dozen eggs! He ships them via USPS to the Phillipines.

    Crazy.

When saw what these 6,000 were gonna cost them on the other end it blew my mind.
