Need Advice on a MOSIN NAGANT

edited March 2014 in General Discussion
I have been offered a Mosin Nagant for $80. Metal is 95% but the wood has some oil staining and needs a good cleaning. The caliber is 7.62X54. I've checked out the auction side for this caliber and there only seems to be spam cans of foreign rounds and not much of it. Should I pass or not. This would be my first foray into this type of rifle.

If the bore is good, I would jump on it!

There is lots of ammo around for it, including hunting ammo.

With Odumbo and Pootin' going at it, Russian ammo and guns will probably be banned from import. There's plenty around now but look to rising prices soon. Just my WAG.[8D]

I have some 54r on the auction side. $80 for the gun is a good deal. I can work with you on ammo qty if you dont want a full can. I have surplus ammo by the way.

I have a dozen of them, they are my go too gun when I carry a bunch of kids to the range and they wish to shoot something larger than a 22. I can let them blast all day for about 50 bucks

Two or three years ago you could buy Mosins all day for $79.00 but it's not that way any more. I would jump on that like a dog on a bone if I were you and don't worry about the stock condition that's not what makes it go bang.

As long as the stock is not cracked and the bore looks good go for it.

Been meaning to get one ever since they were $70. Just looked at some surplus dealers I have accounts with, some have no ammo for them right now except the higher priced rounds, and guns at $159 and up.
I'd grab that one for $80 myself.

May be a dumb question but isn't this ammo the same as what the AK takes?

I would jump on that deal any day. You can not find those rifles for under 100 bucks much anymore.

When I got mine in 1969, the only ammo available was norma 10 rounds to a box and kinda high as my father said . I was too young to buy it. The stock on mine was bubba-ed. It had a hex topped reviever and stamped 1917. The ones I see on the rack at Dunham's these days look like they were made with hammers and files, in someone's basement, in the dark.

We AIM to please has them for $99.95 - B Grade.

Ammo for an AK is 7.62X39. Ammo for a 91/30 is 7.62X54.

A fun rifle to shoot, especially just before dusk and watch the FLAME from the barrel.

It's regularly sold for about twice that price these days. I'd get it. You can always get a new stock.

Spam cans of foreign ammo are what you want! It will be corrosive so you have to clean the rifle every time you shoot it, no big deal.

Everyone should have at least one Mosin Nagant in His or Her collection and at that price I would buy it unless it is broken in half.

    I can't recommend it.

I fired an M-N at the range; I needed to pound the bolt handle with a mallet to get it to rotate into battery. That's with new milsurp ammo.

Then, the rifle beat the frap out of my shoulder. It had more felt recoil than a .30-06. Yeah, I know, I'm a sissy.

    Get it.

Modern production ammo is made for it, but is much more expensive than the surp stuff. Get a lot of the spam can stuff and a few boxes of the new stuff and you'll be all set.

    Great guns. Have 2 myself.

$80 is a good price for any Mosin that is in fair condition. I've even had some with dark bores that shot very well, but I parted with them because shiny bores seem easier to clean corrosive residues out of (I only clean the ones I have, three days in a row after shooting).

There is still a pile of Mosin ammo out there, and the prices are still righteous, even though it has tripled in the past six years. I believe there has been some State Department restrictions on military surplus imports (but not commercial imports) from Russia, so Mosins and 7.62x54 ammo seem to have come from the huge stocks that were maintained in former frontier SSR's. Of the hundreds of Mosin arsenal reworks that I have seen, all carried the postwar arsenal marks of the Ukrainian arsenals. The Belarussians and even the Moldavians, as 'tripwire' satellites, probably still have a lot of Mosins in inventory, too. But as Ozero continues in office, especially as a lame duck, anything may happen. If I wanted anything 'Mosin', I would score it now.
