Guns for Blue Water Boats?

This gets into foreign law, but, with the danger of modern pirates, what do you guys recommend for firearms defense of your boat? Keep in mind that your boat will probably be inspected when it stops in a foreign port and they usually do NOT honor the U.S. Second Amendment. The danger of pirates might also apply to one or two lakes on our southern border.
A few years ago I thought I saw someone selling a dayglo orange shotgun that was being sold as a "livesaving linethrower", (at least that's your story when the foreign customs officer spots it in the cabin), but, by SHEER coincidence [;)] was 12 ga and COULD chamber standard shotgun pellet and slug loads.

I used on when I was in the Navy for "shot line" it was 12ga and capable of firing regular shot shells.
Almost any short barreled shot gun could be used for that purpose.

    excellent choice!
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

I would use one of these:

it makes a shotgun seem mighty silly

For coastal cruising, a sig 226 in 9mm.

For blue water, I'd highly recommend adding a 12 ga.

I think mossberg had a marine environment version?

The Sig would be nice, but I am talking about cruising in the Caribbean and hitting some foreign ports and islands. Handguns can get you arrested in some of those places. The orange shotgun, in a case specially labeled as a linethrower, may be the only choice. It's the only one I can think of right now. In addition to the blank rounds used for the linethrowing, you could probably legally carry a few boxes of 00 Buck and deer slugs in another cupboard on the other side of the cabin. If some boat starts getting too close for comfort, it wouldn't take too long to stuff the mag and persuade them to go jack someone else's boat.

Winchester Stainless Marine 12 ga would be my choice. Has a stainless barrel and mag tube, alloy receiver, plastic stock.

If you are going with a line thrower, then this:

3.5" rocket launcher ought to settle any problems involving an approaching boat full of uninvited party guests.

I have seen an insert that fits into the regular flare gun, which I think uses a flare about 12ga. size. The insert could take 38Special round in an emergency. Not sure how many times it could be used though. With that short barrel, it probably has 1"MOA at 1 foot. LOL

international waters a shot gun as it probably is the most safe in regards to other countries laws and them getting hot about it. Also a shotgun provides greater stand off, hand gun not so much

Here is some good advice from noonsite, a global sailing website

    The bottomline is:

Pump Shotgun is the best choice from a legal standpoint. Know the law and declare the weapon when you reach a port.

This is a great site that tell you the laws of most country's

If we are talking piracy you first want semi-auto rifles to dissuade an attacker while there is still some distance. Think of a skiff with a big outboard motor and some some guys with guns and ladders coming at you. Identify with binoculars, do not wait for their arrival to display your unfriendly side.

As bad guys get closer, the shotgun becomes more valuable. Especially if boarded.

IIRC, some islands treat ammunition the same as a firearm & will get you charged with a crime. if stopped & searched & a line throwing shotgun is found, they may look everywhere for real ammunition.

...on my Island Packet, I kept a mini 14 sst folding stock...hidden in a place I couldn't find...ammo was stored in the mast...never go to sea without some kind of self defense...

When you say Blue water boats this is what comes to mind. Since I worked there many years ago making their Aluminum boats.

I have known those who sailed with full auto Uzis. And they hid them pretty effectively when in foreign ports.

An inspection is far different than a search.

    I would not recommend.

But I sail with at least one solid handgun in coastal waters.

If I were doing the trip you are suggesting, I would purchase a cheap shotgun that I wouldn't mind losing (with appropriate slugs and buckshot), a rusty machete, a sharp gaff hook, triple the required solas aerial flares and launcher, and 5 or so hand held flares.

I would declare the shotgun and ammo upon first contact with the appropriate local authorities.
And I wouldn't get twisted up if I didn't get it back.
At least the outbound leg was covered.

And I would develop a survivor mindset.

That means, if you approach my vessel at sea with hostile intent, you are going to get at least two flares shot down your companionway if I can. And several handheld flares tossed on your deck.

Now we are all fighting for the same thing. Survival.

And you can't risk significant damage to my boat. Or you'll die.

That's what the machete and hook on a stick are for.

Show up on deck with a lit hand held flare dripping * off the leeward rail, with a rusty machete in your other hand...

If they don't give you maneuvering room, you're in for a fight.

But a good radio, and sufficient distance is probably your best defense. [:D]

I think thats good advice bigoutside.

This would be my list for defensive equipment in the Caribbean.

    - Beater Pump Shotgun with 50 slugs, 50 buckshot and a box of #6
    - Good Machete sharp as hell
    - Wrist rocket sling shot with a big bag of marbles
    - A flare gun with about 20 flares and about 20 hand flares.
    - maybe a Molotov cocktail or 2

A sat phone is handy too sometimes.

If you're going to "friendly" ports and the threat is offshore, I recommend a .50 Barrett. In close, or if you might be inspected, as others have said, you can't beat a shotgun with 00 buck. Everyone knows a shotgun and they make GREAT fish whackers...

I'd advise a handgun also, with ready replacement magazines. 9mm or .45 ACP. No one can deny you a self defense weapon like that, in my opinion...but I could be wrong.

We're talking BLUE WATER...so you want range. That's why I recommended the .50 Barrett.

When I had my 32' I had a hiding place for a 870. Not gonna say where but I was boarded a couple times and they never found it. When I am out in my Yak I carry a 12gauge flair gun for emergencies of course. I was out on the inter coastal once and a large boat full of drunks tried to run me over. I got out of the way the first time and when they came around the second time I put a flare right in the cockpit. All they could think about then was putting that flare out. My next move was a 357 mag out of my Ruger but they left me along before that.

    I pack a wrist rocket every where I go[:D]

My Dad and Uncle used to take me offshore fishing out of Titusville Fl. We would cruse all the way to Bermuda sometimes(In the 70's). I always took a wrist rocket to shoot stuff.

I take one with me to Africa when I go. Once you get good with one they can be a formidable weapon and a great survival tool. The good thing is they are innocent looking.

Cool boat, willie.[:D] Do you take it to the Caribbean or just cruise offshore?
Charles, I mainly sailed around the bay...some offshore...after I bought the boat I got more busy than usual, and the boat sat at the Grand Hotel @ Point Clear for around five years...I bought it from a guy that rigged it out at Turtle Cove in Kentucky, then sailed to Bimini! VIA Stuart Fl....he came back to Ft. Morgan, and found out he had cancer...end of story, except I was on my way to Texas for a deer hunt in San Angelo, and a broker called me with a prospect who had seen the boat at the "Grand"..and made me an offer I couldn't refuse...can you say large "Profit"...first time I ever made money off of a boat.
