Back from ATL/hell

Well I made it back from Atlanta and quick visit/check on my Dad. MY Dad is doing fine, he is crazy but gets along good for 86.

He lives in a big old house all by himself, very few friends, and will not move. His choice, he is fairly safe for now and has a sister close by who bugs the hell out of him.

I cannot for the life of me understand why he would choose to live there(Dunwoody Ga). The traffic and roads in the Atlanta area are murder, it is soul crushing to drive there. I have been on better roads in Africa.

On my other post someone said I should go visit Cpt Fun, Well he lives over around Kenasaw and my Dad lives in Dunwoody. The distance is about 25 miles both towns are north of Atlanta.

Depending on the time of day and route, it would take me between 1 to 2.5 hrs to drive that 25 miles.

The drive to Ga from NC was not too bad. I85 is an easy route there are only a few bad places now. They have just about finished all the work in NC and now the only really bad spot is in SC by Spartanburg SC. Gas is cheap in SC, $1.99 a gal for regular so I try to leave NC with about 1/2 tank then fill up in SC, get to Ga with 1/2 tank and do it the other way around.

I was rolling 80mph most of the way except where the roads messed up. Once you get to Buford Ga you are in traffic and will stay in traffic all the way in. I have tried going around it on back roads but they are just as bad most of the time. The only way to beat it is to drive real early or late in the day.

I know there are a few guys on here who live around there and I really feel sorry for them.

Like I said before I would rather get kicked in the nuts than go there but you got to do what you got to do.

Its good to be home[;)]

He's 86, Sam. There's only one more permanent move he's going to make unless he's forced to.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Thats a fact. I thought I was going to have to put him in a place where they can keep an eye on you, but he got better.

Everyone told me I have to take his keys away and put him in a old folks home.

I told them I am not doing it until he; wants it, he cannot take care of himself anymore or he is dangerous to himself and others.

They all told me I was a bad son and that I sucked blah blah blah...I told to bleen off and that when I need their advice I would beat it out them.[:0]

As long as he is safe and happy(The real happy[:0]) He is on his own. I just want him to get rid of that huge 2 story house in the middle of hell and move up here closer to me so I can see him more.

I love going to see him except where he lives just sucks so bad it kills me to go down there.

He has a friend in Lincolnton NC that he goes and visits with all the time and asked him to move up there. He has the money and his house is worth 500k easy. He would be 2.5hrs away from me. It would be nice.

Well its not happening so I guess I will have to go see him every 4 months in hell.

He might come around, Sam. If it's pitched that a move would be easier and simpler FOR HIM because of the travel, he may come to think it's his own idea to relocate.

I must not be much of a salesman because I have pitched it as best as I can.

I thought I had him sold last month. He was in NC visiting his friend and I went there to see both of them. I pulled my boat and we all went fishing. Both of the old ones had fun.

    No sale.

He is a set in his ways.

He eats at the same place every day. Gets up does the same thing every day.

    Its kind of sad really.

Sam, the older you get the less you want ANYthing new. You have your routine, and you do not like to change it. At all. The unfamiliar is - if not actually a danger - a giant nuisance.

He might, however, be brought to accept his friends and his visits to them as being more familiar and thus more welcome than his house. (Especially if the sister bugs him enough.)

His Sister drives him crazy. She doesn't talk to me anymore(Thank you god). She pushed my buttons a little too hard and I pushed back.

Another reason I hate going there.

I know the deal on change with old folks, the only change they want is in their pocket.

I am from Dunwoody. Lived there for years, went to Chamblee High School. I watched them build the Perimeter, they finished it in 1968.

A bunch of my high school buddies and I got in the car the day they finished it, and we took a lap around Atlanta! We thought that was great, drive all around the big city without seeing a stop light.

Nothing but trees and cow pastures on I 285 in that year, and it was 2 lanes east and 2 lanes west the whole way.

That didn't last long. Now it is, as you say, a hell hole.

Dunwoody is a good place to be from, as long as you are far away from it. And I am. Moved to the wilderness of the NC mountains 21 years ago. Good Lord am I sick of Atlanta traffic and crime!

Actually, our offices are not to far from Dunwoody. We used to be up in Kennesaw, moved late last year for some reason. I live even farther north of there up near Lake Allatoona.

I had to go through Dunwoody last week to pick my car up. Used to work right there near 400. I certainly do not miss that, but where the office is now, is not any better....

My Grandfather did that about that age, except when I was there the "same thing every day" was stopping off for breakfast on the way fishing or shrimping coming back to the house to sort our catch and then drive around and give any extra that would not fit in our freezer to his friends. I was pretty content with that schedule.

As Lewis Grizzard once said... If you die in the South, you still will have to connect in Atlanta... (I still miss him and his dog Catfish... one of the funniest people I ever met) We will be in the Mountains for the eclipse Monday, but I have to be at the airport that night... That will be a nightmare trip... In the total dark at 3pm getting lighter as we head south. I anticipate traffic will be epic.

My daughter in law and family are coming up here from Atlanta to see the eclipse.
We are 30 miles nw of Asheville. We will get 98.7 percent full eclipse.
Right after the show they have to go back to Atlanta, the kids are skipping school Monday, parents have to go back to work etc.

I think they will be caught in a massive traffic jam, might be one for the books.

By the way, I was watching Asheville tv news a week ago. They were at a Holiday Inn Express in Franklin NC. Franklin gets 100 percent eclipse.
A guy from California booked a room there, one year ago, so he could see the eclipse.
Ten days ago, the hotel called him and said "Your room is not available, we will be painting your room on that day."

Yeah, right. This guy raised hell, called management at Holiday Inn, and he called channel 13 news in Asheville. His story got out.
And the hotel suddenly cancelled the "room repairs" and told him that his room would be available, after all.

We will get 98 at my house also... This is a TOTAL eclipse... get to the path... 98 is not good enough... I have had this arranged for 5 years.

Your Holiday Inn Guy is chump change. I have a story to tell. But will only tell it after I see the eclipse and get back home.

...no way in hell will I travel to see the eclipse...my luck it will be cloudy anyway.....I remember reading a book in the 3rd grade about the BIO of William Penn....it told of his experience with a total eclipse.....Penn seemed to be mesmerized with the event...I had no idea what I was reading about, but it sure was like science fiction....
