Okay, Donna and I need some places to start looking at for retirement in Alabama. We want something close to the coast, BUT, BUT, something in the country with woods and maybe enough land for our horses. Maybe within a half an hour or one hour to the beach if possible. Looking for some place that is in a good community, schools, town, police, etc. NO CITY LIVING. We are definitely country/shore living people. Our price range on property varies. We prefer something for around 250,000 to 500,000 max. Not going back into the mortgage thing ever again. I looked at some web sights, but most just show you city living or houses that are way to big and too expensive. Looking for something with one floor because of my back. No more stairs. I just need info on what areas to look at, counties, towns, etc. I think we are going to retain a house here in NJ for a part time place or until we are sure we really like living in the south. As anyone knows, moving to a new state can be scary for a first timers. Both of us are a little nervous about the move, but know it has to happen. Our taxes on this house just hit 14,000 a year.[:(!] Oakie

Start your search in Baldwin County. It's on the coast and borders the Florida state line to east and Mobile bay on the west. Robertsdale, Foley, and Seminole are some of the more rural towns. Dapne, Fairhope and Spanish Fort are less rural and just across the bay from Mobile. Bay Minette is really rural but farther from the coast, north of I-10. I live just across the state line in Florida and love the climate down here. A little warm and muggy in the summer but very mild winters.
Good luck on your search.
Lots of good open land between Loxley and Bay Minette. Stapleton is unincorporated and land is still fairly cheap to build if you want to do that. It also has Three Brothers Shooting Range there.
Baldwin county is the spot. A number of my sisters friends have horses out south of Town aways but they are on some pretty sizable ranches. I'd say go down and rent something on Ono Island for a bit and just wander around. See what you like.
I'd love something on one of the Bayous off Wolf Bay. But up the top end off the Bay near PWillie is more protected and you can get more land.
Try Zillow.com it will let you zoom in on the map and see the topography and the houses in the area.
I just put this in my favorites, so I can look in this county over the weekend. Oakie
Baldwin is the largest County in Alabama, it may take a bit. We will be at the beach in June. (Usually we go for Spring break, but my girls are not on the same school schedule any more.) Cmon down!
