Okay, Donna and I need some places to start looking at for retirement in Alabama. We want something close to the coast, BUT, BUT, something in the country with woods and maybe enough land for our horses. Maybe within a half an hour or one hour to the beach if possible. Looking for some place that is in a good community, schools, town, police, etc. NO CITY LIVING. We are definitely country/shore living people. Our price range on property varies. We prefer something for around 250,000 to 500,000 max. Not going back into the mortgage thing ever again. I looked at some web sights, but most just show you city living or houses that are way to big and too expensive. Looking for something with one floor because of my back. No more stairs. I just need info on what areas to look at, counties, towns, etc. I think we are going to retain a house here in NJ for a part time place or until we are sure we really like living in the south. As anyone knows, moving to a new state can be scary for a first timers. Both of us are a little nervous about the move, but know it has to happen. Our taxes on this house just hit 14,000 a year.[:(!] Oakie

The only place I want to live,is where I now live...Baldwin County, Al. NO real large cities but great medical facilities in Fairhope, and Foley, Al....Capt. Fun knows where I'm talking about...I live above I-10 about 4 miles in Spanish Fort,Al. I nsurance is cheaper above 10 (hurricanes.. about 40 miles from the Gulf, and real close to the Mobile River Delta, a hunting and fishing paradise...Demographics are 10%...Great schools (for the south)and tops in real estate value.I actually live in the County...Great place for horses, dogs, cattle,in central Baldwin...best prices are above I-10...If you need anything more let know, and I will do my best to make you welcome...you do know you will be a refugee from the north???? LOL! Many Snow Birds winter down here on the Gulf Coast...Shooting sports are abundant here and we love guns...safest place on the planet...

    Oakie,
Start your search in Baldwin County. It's on the coast and borders the Florida state line to east and Mobile bay on the west. Robertsdale, Foley, and Seminole are some of the more rural towns. Dapne, Fairhope and Spanish Fort are less rural and just across the bay from Mobile. Bay Minette is really rural but farther from the coast, north of I-10. I live just across the state line in Florida and love the climate down here. A little warm and muggy in the summer but very mild winters.

    Good luck on your search.

I forgot, my niece is in the real estate business.....send me a mail, and I'll get you set up with her,she is low key and not a pusher..Sky King lives around the corner from me just south of Bay Minette...If your a horse guy, there is a "Polo" field down past Capt. Funs moms place in Fairhope..

On a map, draw a 25 mile circle around the intersection of I 10 and Hwy 59. That's your ground zero.

Lots of good open land between Loxley and Bay Minette. Stapleton is unincorporated and land is still fairly cheap to build if you want to do that. It also has Three Brothers Shooting Range there.

Downtown Montgomery will make you feel right at home. Camden South I call it.... [:D]

Baldwin county is the spot. A number of my sisters friends have horses out south of Town aways but they are on some pretty sizable ranches. I'd say go down and rent something on Ono Island for a bit and just wander around. See what you like.

I'd love something on one of the Bayous off Wolf Bay. But up the top end off the Bay near PWillie is more protected and you can get more land.

Try Zillow.com it will let you zoom in on the map and see the topography and the houses in the area.

The best thing to do is come down and rent you a place to live, and look the County over... I lived in Mobile for 40 years before I moved over here,,,and I rented a place for a year(household in storage) found some real bargains, and know of 29 acres behind my house on the river, asking price is 450,000... Metcalf Realty has it! off of hiway 225...wildlife every where...including hogs... 3 miles from I-10...http://www.metcalfeco.com/. property was originally offered @ 1 mil.

Thank you. I will email you shortly. Been exhausted and went to bed right after I posted last night. Heading to be at 6:30 tonight too. Been getting up at 3:30 and at the office by 5 am. Just really messed up with the time change and being real busy. Oakie

That is a nice lot, I didn't realize it was for sale. There is a BassPro right down the street too.

Baldwin is the largest County in Alabama, it may take a bit. We will be at the beach in June. (Usually we go for Spring break, but my girls are not on the same school schedule any more.) Cmon down!
