When you mentioned your Savage ML, is that the Mod 10ML that uses the smokeless powder?

I was kind of wondering what standard velocities with a 240gr XTP will run out of a 26" ML.

Shortest distance is to shoot though I-40, ABQ and Flagstaff. Risk of snow and high winds that time of year though.

If you take aim thru El Paso, Tucson and Phoenix you avoid the sometimes winter storms on I-40 through northern NM and AZ. But you add some distance and ABQ has some good eat'n.

    So it's a trade off.

Any way you go there will be a risk of winter weather in N. Arizona and S. Nevada, I-40 adds Missouri, Okla, and Texas to the risk list. I would probably get familiar with both routings and be prepared to make a decision the last week before leaving based on weather forecasts. It is possible to change routes, along the way, but that adds miles and time. You could take I-10 to El Paso and I-25 to Albuquerque if eating here is important. From Albuquerque I-40 to Flagstaff and west is about 5 hours if the weather is good.

Mobile Alabamy? If ya wanna run mostly "big road" go west on I-10 and somewhere in th Cajun state grab I-49 to I-20. Take I-20 to Dallas-Ft. Worth and grab RT 287 north to Amarillo, then I-40 west all the way to Kingman Arizona, you will know you are in Kingman because it will be hot.

From Kingman grab RT 93 north, you can take the new bypass or you can cross Hoover Damn and then on to Vegas.

Bunches of other ways to go but in Dec, Jan you are in for a treat. Flagstaff had three seasons, July, Aug and Winter. NM can be a nitemare east of Albuquerqe and the same with TX west of Amarillo. May be best to fly that time of year if sudden snowstorms make you jittery. That high up in elevation makes for sometimes SEVERE winter driving! I spent a lot of years running I-44 and I-40 from PA to CA so I know what it's like in the winter, unfriggin predictable!!
