Who uses Loc-Tite for scope mounts?
I've heard pros and cons of each. Loc-tite users, which #?
Thoughts?
Looking to mount a scope on a 338 Win Mag. BIG BOOM!
Thanks in advance,
Ed

Yes, but only on problem guns/mounts. I use Blue Loctite.

    #242.

On customer guns I always used Loc-tite blue, gosh, I must have gone through gallons of that stuff. Place a small drop on each mounting screw for both the base and rings, that will keep anything from moving around. Very necessary on any hunting rifle.

For my guns I do not use anything, my guns are mostly bench guns that recoil little plus I like to swap out scopes as needed, that just becomes a mess when loc-tite is involved.

Blue is the way to go, Red is too permanent, and usually takes heat to release.

I have used loctite sparingly for years as a heavy equipment mechanic. Some guys would apply it from a five gallon bucket with a calsamine(sp?) brush if they could. I have seen the trouble that stuff can cause, and frankly, it scares the heck outta me. I was brought up, and trained under the opinion that "GENERALLY" loctite is a crutch for an improperly installed fastener. That being said, sometimes you have to use a dab. I have used other stuff as a thread lock of my own thinking up over the years too.

When I fell timber for a living I would use automotive silicone gasket goo on problem screws on my chainsaws. That worked very well, as the screws were threaded into aluminum. There was just enough hold to keep the screw tight, but it would come out if you wanted, and not take the aluminum threads with it. I have used fingernail polish on a few gun screws, and that appears to work well also. I have however, never thread locked a scope mount, but if it was my rifle would try the silicone or nail polish first. If you do use the loctite, I would use the blue, and just a TINY dab. Two or three threads is all. That's my two cents, anyway.[;)]

I switch from the 242 to the 222 small fastener formula alot easier to get apart if you want to change scope around

I bed all my mounts, torque per recommendation, and Loctite (242) the screws.

I use Burris Signature Zee rings with inserts; no Loctite required when properly torqued, even on magnums.
