Which transmission for a LS3?

I need suggestions on what transmission to go with a 500+hp LS3 engine. It's gotta be automatic and capable of handling this HP and tons of low end torque. It's going in a Gen 4 Camaro, which was originally a V-6 model. Would a 700R4 or 4L60E be suitable? Helping a buddy build his car.

If you go with a 4L60E make sure it is built up...check out Monster Transmissions, they can build it how you want for a decent price. I wouldn't put a stock 4L60E behind 500+ HP.

    My 01 LS1 Camaro had a 4L60E, which I had to replace!

I thought the 700R4 was known to be light duty.

700r4 performance built will handle that 500hp easily.

Upgrade to a built 4L80E... Everything is heavier and stronger... Hence they was used in 3/4 and 1 ton trucks...But whatever tranny you use....Especially with a 2500+ stall converter put the biggest tranny cooler you can in front of the radiator, preferrably with a electric fan... Stall converters build a lot of heat in the trans. and will burn them up if drove around town alot. And dont forget, if its got a big cam and built tranny, it aint gonna do much if ya dont get the gearing in the rear swapped too..... 4.10 will work good with the cam hes probably running and a 2500 to 3500 stall.

I know the 700r4 came in the early 90's model Police Package Caprices, but they were no where near this much HP. He's got a both of these trannys, but was wondering if there was another one that might suit him better. What tranny comes in the new Camaro and Caddy that runs that bad assed LSA?

    +1 on the powerglide.

I've got one in my Nova race car that's behind a 468 and it handles the horsepower pretty well.

I think it will depend on what the builder is going to do with his car.

Powerglides make great trannys for race cars. Street cars, not so much. Two speeds will get you down the track, but leave a bit to be desired if you are going to drive around town.

You can easily and economically upgrade the 4l60e to the 4l65e, and that should handle the horsepower, though you may need to reprogram the computer. Just be sure to use a one piece sunshell.

Convertor will be the money part. May the force be with you!

Now, he is talking about swapping a 6spd manual into this car! How hard would that be to convert an auto car to a manual! He just got a 6spd from the same year Camaro for under $150.00
