For all her hard work with our business we just sold. She doesn't want to go.[:(]Donna said she would much rather go some wheres and just stay for two weeks. I have never been on a cruise and really wanted to go. She wants to go to an island in the carribean. What is a good island to go to[?] We have only been to the Bahamas and Key west.

The only one I've been to is Antigua. Went there escorting a reporter doing a story on the NASA tracking station. Didn't stay at a resort and was appalled by the contrast between the resorts and how the natives really live. Honestly, the average Vietnamese peasant lived better than an average Antiguan.

I have no reason to believe anything has changed in the 30 years since then. Once outside the walled tourist enclaves, those islands are depressing, crime-filled places.

Take her. Next time, she'll appreciate a cruise.
    I may be a bit crazy - but I didn't drive myself.

Like FCD said, for a cruise go on an Alaskan one.
My favorite Caribbean island is by far Turks and Caicos.

St Thomas (in the US Virgin Islands) would be my choice. You can rent a house (& a 4WD to get there). You're isolated, but it's paradise. (And safe.) A short drive to restaurants, or to the most beautiful beaches you've ever seen.

This is true. Outside of the tourist areas you might as well be in Somalia, or Haiti or someplace. It really is that stark of a contrast too.

i noticed that first thing on all the islands, its a real crime that they all get to live in paradise and make it look like L.A. or detroit

I agree, St. Thomas is a beautiful place. There is not another island that I've been on that can hold a candle to it.

American Airlines flies direct from New York to St. Thomas in about three and a half hours.

You know of course that passports are required.

Do I need a passport to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands?

If you are a U.S. citizen a passport is not required, but it still serves as the best identification when traveling. Otherwise, you must be prepared to show evidence of citizenship when departing the islands, such as a raised-seal birth certificate and government-issued photo ID.

If you are not a U.S. citizen, then a passport issued by your country of origin is required.

If you are not sure of your status, please contact the U.S Customs & Border Protection agency. (www.cbp.gov)

I am not a cruise person, but I know several.
I agree that an Alaskan coastal cruise is fascinating, based on friends' pictures.
Also one of the ladies in Pilates class does those European river cruises and keeps going back.

I have heard pros and cons on Caribbean cruises.
One tour with a shipboard bug or major systems failures will turn you off the whole category.

Hawaii is nice, but one curmudgeon on my (business) first trip there said that Florida has better beaches and the Smokies and Rockies have better mountains.

I went on a 16 day cruise to Hawaii last December. The bad part is that you don't have a lot of time in each port but it was still the best cruise I have been on.
There was the oddity that there were so many people in such bad shape.
Between the wheelchairs, motorized scooters, canes, oxygen masks etc it seemed half the people had some infirmity. I especially enjoyed the more civilized music they played most of the time.

I've been to a few of the islands, it depends what you're looking for. St. Thomas and St.Marten were kind of commercial. Lots of shopping. All the smaller islands were great. Barbados was beautiful.

British or US VI, If you are handy with a boat, you can do a bare boat charter (with or without capt) and explore all you want....

That is on my to do list....

..I'll cast my vote too, since we don't have much experience elsewhere. Sandals all inclusive is great. Outside the resort is a third world poverty hell-hole, but flash some U.S. money and you'll be treated alright.
..Sandals has no kids and you can relax without being on a schedule. There are plenty of activities if you're so inclined but you're not pressured to partake in anything. If you drink beer, Piton is very good....and included, as are call brand drinks.

Edit: I almost forgot. Don't wash your picked fruit in the sprinkler water. It's filtered sewage. A 103+ fever the day after we got home did not make a nice homecoming. The groundskeeper stopped me about one second after I took a bite. Too late..[xx(]

Never go to Jamaica even if your life depends on it.
You have about a 97% chance of being robbed, mugged or asaulted there. Almost any other island (except Nassau. Too commercial) would be a good trip. Any of the "St." islands are worth a look.

If you go to an all inclusive resort in Jamaica and do not leave the grounds it is OK. Otherwise, stay off that island.

We've been to Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, and Saint Lucia, they were all nice, Grand Cayman was the safest place to go, you aren't restricted to the resorts, like you are in the others. The others are so poor, that it's dangerous to leave the resorts.

If you want to spend some money, go to the Tahitian Islands, especially Bora Bora, that is THE BEST place I've ever been to!
