My extended family and I spent last week cruising on a 41 foot sailboat. Had an absolute blast. At least thats the way I'm remembering it. I'm sure as others forget all my fussing and pointing and yelling to trim the sails or let out more anchor rode, they too, will come to remember it as a fun time.

But anyway... We got boarded by the U.S. Coast Guard.

I've been boating in lakes, the ocean, ponds, rivers, puddles, the bathtub, everywhere... for almost 50 years. Thats never happened to me before.

Anyone else ever have that experience?

They were absolute professionals (I think we were part of a training exercise). They conducted themselves in a military fashion throughout the interaction. They were helpful and in all ways gentlemen.

But it was kind of spooky having someone step into what was essentially our home without probable cause or a warrant and conduct a pretty extensive search.

WE were checked not boarded by Canadian coast guard while I was fishing off Vacouver Ilsand one time. Our boat was to small to board. I caught a ling cod and they were about a mile away traveling real slow. As soon as I brought it in the guide said "Watch they will launch a rubber boat now and come over and check us" sure enough they had been watching us with a scope of some kind, as as soon as I caught a lingcod they came, I had caught other types they didnt come. Lingcods had to have tags. Thats how powerful of a scope they were using .They were real AZZHATS to both the guide and me.

I always wondered what people saw in Sailing, seems like tons of work. When im in a boat im trying to have a good time, even though it turns into work one way or another sailing seems to increase the work and diminish the fun, does it not?

they did start to write me up for a discharge label that said it was ok to dump beyond 1000 yds...

i pointed out that the boat was a former bvi charter. that sticker was from the bvi. i showed them the correct stickers and we were good to go.

There are stainless shotguns designed specifically for that purpose.

I'd recommend taking it out of you pocket before going swimming, but I was in a state with recipricol ccw. So I did.[;)]

I wouldn't dream of going offshore or anchoring somewhere when help may be an hour or more away without some sort of protection for my family.

A wonderful Captain who taught me much about sailing (and life) once responded to a question I had about sail trim and maximizing boat speed with "that sounds too much like work..."

I try to remember that. I often fail. But it was some of the best advice I ever got. So no, if you're doing it right, it isn't work.
