Tazzer question....selling???

A friend of mine is trying to sell me a REAL tazzer (like the police carry) with a couple of the little pack thingamabobs that snap on the end and shoot the probes out.

From what I remember about those you have to get a special permit to sell them.....don't you???

I don't want the thing myself. I can only IMAGINE having all of the mess I deal with all of the time and the thing that gets me into trouble would be a tazzer!!!

Believe that correct. Civilians here in Il. I am quite sure can't own them.

Not to bust your eggs, but it is a "Taser"

No. It's TASER, an acronym, not a word, so it is properly spelled in all caps. Since it is not a word, TASER cannot be a verb. It stands for Thomas Alva Swift Electric Rifle.

I know of no federal restrictions. Check your state laws.

No restrictions to sell or buy, only to posess I believe. Post a link or pic?

What model is it? M26? X26?

I don't know what model it is.....it has yellow on the sides and looks exactly like what I see the Birmingham Police wearing.

Surely you can't just buy a gun that shoots probes into someone's body and jolts them with electricity without SOME kind of permit or restrictions......???

As long as there is no powder charge propelling the probes, the feds aren't interested. Check your local laws.

The original TASER did use a powder charge to propel the probes, and since there was no rifling in the "barrel," it was classified as AOW, and required registration.

    Look, they sell to anyone:

The "background check" is not a legal requirement, only a liability dodge.

When you turn it on, are there numbers at the rear of the unit, facing the holder, or just flashing or steady red light?

Green numbers, its a X26, just a red light, M 26. Im guessing also, it might be a c2 or an x26c, but we would need to see pics to know for sure.

Wouldnt be bad to sell on here...

New models will not work until activated by the manufacturer. Be sure you know the status of the one before offering it for sale.

Note that most new models also shoot "confetti" with the serial number microprinted.

The air-cartridges have expiration dates on them so make sure you check the white label on the back. The new ones don't have labels, but rather its imprinted in the plastic.

yellow blast doors- 15 foot cartridge
    silver blast doors- 21 foot
green blast doors- xd probe 25 foot
orange blast doors - xd 35 foot

be careful when handling those air cartridges, and don't hold or put any part of your body in front of the blast doors. Static electricity can cause discharge.

Absolutely correct (never disagree with the boss in a public forum[:D]) and I should have put it in caps above, but this acronym has quickly grown into common usage, much like laser and other non-words such as Xerox.

Since there is generally no buttstock, and it is generally operated as a hand held device, how come it isn't a TASEP ? (Electric Pistol?)

Check your state laws,, Here in Florida one can carry electronic weapons with their concealed permits. I does not specify what kinds.

    Q. What kinds of weapons are included in the concealed weapons law?

    A. The Jack Hagler Self-defense Act defines concealed weapons or firearms as follows: handguns, electronic weapons or devices, tear gas guns, knives and billies. The information provided emphasizes handguns, because they are one of the most commonly used weapons for self-defense.

I don't know; I didn't get to name the darn thing. TASEP would be more accurate, but it wouldn't "sing," now would it?

In reality, the first TASER may have been configured like a rifle. The first one I ever saw was in the mid 1970s, and it was configured like a flashlight. It actually was a flashlight. The beam was used to illuminate and aim. It had two cartridges, and no capablity of delivering a shock without firing a cartridge.

I thought, and still think, that it makes more sense to configure the TASER as something other than a pistol, so that under stress, we don't get them confused.

Its not something I plan on doing anything with....I'll probably ask around to see if anyone I know wants it. The bloomin' thing sounds scary as crap when you turn it on.

The name TASER comes from a book written many years ago. The name of the hero was Tom Swift, and one of his weapons was his electric rifle. Hence the name that the TASER inventor used is an acronym:

    Tom
    Swift's
a (dont know why the A is there)
    Electric
    Rifle

At least that is what the TASER sales guys told me.

Like my little brother said, the M18 is an older model, not sure they are worth much these days. Still works, but not NEAR as well as the X26 series, although i think they take the same cartridges.

Being that it is old, you don't know the history of it and you don't know that it is functioning properly I would do one of two things with it.

    1. destroy it with a sledge hammer

    2. give it back to the person that gave it to you

If that is used on someone and its defective, guess who is going to be named in the Lawsuit???

    just a thought

Now, tell the oldest she better act right or you're going to test it on her.....and for everything that is holy keep it away from the boy, he will definitely want to test it on himself or a friend. [:D]
