WILLIAMSFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities now say a man who died while deer hunting in western Illinois was shot to death by his father in a likely accident.
Knox County Sheriff David Clague told the The Star Courier in Kewanee (http://bit.ly/A20MhT ) that 34-year-old Steven Hayworth Jr. of Washington died near Williamsfield. The town is 35 miles northwest of Peoria.
Clague said Hayworth was walking about 400 yards ahead of his father, 59-year-old Steven Hayworth, and another hunter trying to flush deer. Two deer ran toward the father who fired. Clague said the shot struck the younger Hayworth in the head.
Clague said the father couldn't have seen his son because of the terrain. The older Hayworth was briefly hospitalized Sunday for unspecified reasons.
Clague said the shooting was almost certainly an accident.

Out of curiousity, what's the countryside like out in western Illinois?
Heavy woods, open fields, hilly, etc.?
Accidentally headshot from 400 yds. away? Dang...it's just your time.

low rolling hills and heavy woods where this happened

So given this layout it could have very well been the result of a ricochet?
Dang.

Hard to say, I heard it as 400 yards and I heard it as 400 feet. I've also heard it was a 12ga slug, and I've heard it was a .308 pistol.
ricochet is a possibility
This type of cooperative hunting is very common in this area. Hunters go to their stands before daylight, and later get together to push deer towards other hunters. Very dangerous if hunters are not exactly aware of where others are, and when the deer start running sometimes hunters forget to take into account the location of others. Even when using radios it is difficult to know the location of all involved. Not uncommon for people to talk about how many shots went over them during hunting season.
I quit participating in cooperative hunts several years ago. Too many times shots at game were way too close to other hunters. A bullet zinging nearby or over you is a very unnerving sound, one I won't forget.

I went to Eureka College in Eureka,IL. About 10 miles from where the victim lived.
.308 is not legal caliber for the handgun exception on acceptable cartridge size.
quote:For handguns, a bottleneck centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger with a case length not exceeding 1.4 inches, or a straight-walled centerfire cartridge of .30 caliber or larger, both of which must be available as a factory load with the published ballistic tables of the manufacturer showing a capability of at least 500 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. Note: There is no case length limit for straight-walled cartridges.
.38 pistol is more likely.( I use a 6" Ruger GP-100 .357 for a sidearm in deer season) I can see a .357 mag going that far.
I haven't heard a single thing about it, but could be one of the sabot slugs(Federal, Hornady uses pistol caliber bullets with alot of FPS) or a .44/.45 caliber muzzleloader bullet
At least in this case the person was actually shooting at a deer instead of shooting at a noise. Sad either way but it bugs me to no end when I read how some shcmuck blew away another hunter because he "thought he was a deer in the brush".
Shooting at a running deer....stupid. Especially when you know there is another hunter in the vicinity. [:(!]
He was part of a big extended group of friends I'd hang out with and go to parties with while working on my Masters.
I was sad when I first heard and became enraged when I heard it was a hunting "accident"...what the hell are some people thinking shooting without making a positive ID?
Its not a video-game...whatever you sight is not going to shoot you back unless you shoot first and figure out what it is later [:(!]
