How many people still have the rifle they shot their first deer or elk with? I am not lucky enough to own the Winchester model 88 in .243 that I harvested my first deer with but in a stroke of luck my uncle did gift me my first elk rifle, a Remington model 710 in .30-06

I just turned 18 in 1974 and it was a birthday present to myself.

I have the rifle I shot my 1st deer with. A Ruger M77 Ultralight in .308 Winchester. I think I might pass it down to my nephew in a few years, if he is big enough.

First and only deer I've ever shot was with a Remington 710 in .270. I still have the gun but don't shoot it much anymore. The 710 is not a great rifle but it's what I could afford at the time.

A Mossberg 472PCA 30-30 that was bought new in '73 or '74. Never did eject like it should so it's been parked all this time.

But I just can't bring myself to get rid of it.

At 42 years old that question is still open as I have never shot a deer, let alone a bird or squirrel. Actually that's not true I've had to put down a few sick/injured deer, ground hogs and raccoons but never have been "hunting" before.

1974 vintage Winchester Model 70 in 270 Winchester.
Took my first deer and my first elk with it and every one since. All have been one shot stops and the rifle still shoots dime sized 100 yard groups. After 41 years it feels like a part of me.

Yes I do. It's a Marlin 336, chambered in 35 Remington. I bought it used from a hardware store in 1981, and harvested my first deer with a rifle that fall. I own a pile of rifles, but that one is my favorite.

Elk. 1968. Remington 1903A3 in a sporter stock, but with original peep. Shots standing and sitting. My eyeglass prescript was very obsolete cuz I couldn't afford an optical exam/new glasses. Lucky 3 shots. Still have it, but with a nicer custome stock. The old one had electrical tape over a tang crack. And I have an unissued scant stock to put her back if I find a front barrel band.

I just recently officially inherited it when my Dad passed back in November.

    1948 Winchester Model 70 in 30/06.

Shot my first deer with it back in 1981 in Hondo, Texas.

"Borrowed" it almost every year to hunt with.

Dad never had a problem with me using it because it always came back cleaner than it left.

Mine is still in the safe. Mossberg model 500. No rifled barrel or scope. Most of us who grew up in Iowa had these.
