Dad gave me some coins this weekend, included in the bag was some gold that came from a tooth and a "Ike" dollar. Here are the other coins:

It appears to have damage to the reverse, I can't tell by the photo is that is discoloration or damage above the shield.

My belief is Good. If Damaged however, PCGS or NGC would not grade it.

Check this Website and compare it for yourself...

    It's a small 0 by the way.

It is damage. Small but damage none the less.

It is cool no matter what. 193 years old, makes you wonder where it has been over the years and what it was used to buy..

Yeah. The example used on PCGS page has damage in it as well and their copy is still graded VF. This coing is NOT a vf coin. But if it a VG25 it's a $300 coin and will be shipped to Austin for grading and slabbing. It was given to my dad who gave it to me. So it just become a family coin and will receive the same treatment as coins that have been in the family for over a century.

I agree with you, where has this coin been? What has it "seen"? Civil war, Titanic, Great Depression. This coin was in circulation when Ludwig van Beethoven was writing some of his best music!

This coin just replaced my 1852 large cent as the oldest coin in the collection.

The good thing about the some third party graders it they will at least slab it as Genuine if damaged. ANACS will give it a grade and then call it damaged.

I have a 1916D Mec. Dime slabbed by ANACS. It is graded AG3 details and marked scratched. The value of the coin is greatly reduced due to the Damage, but it is at least a real 16D.

This is the best site for checking coin grades. [:)][:)]quote:Originally posted by William81

One of the reasons I like ANACS over the others. I'd rather have a coin that is graded properly and leaning towards the lower dollar than a coin over graded. That is why I say ICG and NCG are crap grade companies. They over grade by a full point on everything.

PCGS is the best, but most of their staff learned at ANACS. At least the older ones did.

By the way, I enjoyed the story how you got the coin.

    Not considering the damage, VG.

Gonna need full rims and Liberty for VF.

    Maybe so.

The value isn't really an issue. Other than this would not only be the oldest coin in my collection, but it is possible the most valuable behind the 1oz Krugerrand.
