unexpected discharge, accident or negligent?

The Winchester model 121 was only produced for a short period of time. I can't help but wonder if this problem was the reason for the short production run: If the bolt is removed and returned with the extractor clips reversed the gun will fire when the bolt closes.

This happened to me with a 121Y, the first firearm I ever owned. I was so surprised then the rifle went off, the round hit the ground a few feet away. Then I carefully pointed the gun in a safe direction and loaded another round. It went off, too.

The dealer had to return the gun to the factory, when we got it back he chewed me up and down saying I had no reason to remove the bolt for ordinary cleaning.
I used to recruit for the NRA until they sold us down the river (again!) in Heller v. DC. See my auctions (if any) under username henryreilly

    Glad you survived Henry.

Happy to hear no one was on the wrong end of that Win 121 !

It all boiled down to your safe pointing of the muzzle; always assume the piece could fire at any time. This training has served me well, too.
I have a Marlin Model 15 bolt action single shot. I found that if you pulled the trigger HARD while the safety was on, it would fire when the safety was released. I use it for training new shooters now, to demonstrate that safeties are not 100% safe.

Never did care for even a unloaded gun pointed my direction, even by myself and especially by someone else.[;)]
and I've used guns and hunted from time I was a young whippersnapper.[;)]
