She apparently took a class on surviving a 'gator attack. She must have paid attention, as she struck gator on the nose and pried lower jaw down, and escaped with only puncture wounds on knee and calf.

I'd say she was a good student.

It's Florida for God's sake. If there is a wet spot somewhere, anywhere in the state ..... there's a gator in it.

I grew up not giving much thought to them (ah youthful ignorance) but they (Gators) are absolutely everywhere, I've never even heard of a lake, pond, creek, etc. that didn't have a gator in it.

No way she could pry open a gator's jaw if he was really intent on eating her. He would have already starting rolling in order to tear her leg off if he was hungry.

The good students weren't swimming with gators!

She applied pressure to the lower jaw and it opened its mouth in response. If that isn't prying its mouth open, what is?

That death roll is pretty violent. How big was the gator?

I doubt seriously if she actually did pry the jaws open, I think that I read that it was eight feet long. I once had a two foot gator clamp down on my left hand and it took two of my friends to open his mouth.

If you had taken the class you would known to punch it in the nose first, then pry open the jaw.

Report I read said the 'gator was 8' 7".

Well, if they had classes back then and I did take the class, I wouldn't have a story to tell now. [:D]

And the old lady at the back of the bar said "I'll give it a whirl. But you better not hit me on the head with that cane."

Local news had her on, she said she ran her finger up it's nostrils, and startled it enough that it turned her loose. Sounds like she just helped it open it's mouth.
Eyes, nose, or the throat thingie that blocks water is their only vulnerability. Lucky kid!

There's a reason gators have been around in some form or another for a "zillion" years. (I'm betting HeDog can give us an exact timeframe.) My limited experience is that they're completely unpredictable, dangerous and can be fast as lightning when they want/need to be. You have to respect their cunning, abilities and territory. Seldom are we at the top of the food chain when completely in their environment.

    Around 180 million years

Average bite force of an adult is 2980 psi according to studies at Florida State University.

Salt Water Crocodiles have the strongest bite of any living animal at 3700 psi.

I can honestly say I have handled gators of various sizes a few hundred times. Holding their mouths closed is easy. A hand on each side and I can hold a 10 footer closed. No one pried open the jaws of an 8 foot gator.

Bet that Gator would spit them rednecks out fast! Too much blubber, not enough meat for a gator.
