I have watched this movie about 100 times or more. I've never read the book and was wondering if it is, or could be any better than the movie. After seeing the movie this many times would the book be worth reading? Has anyone here read it.

The movie was great, but the book is outstanding! I've read it about 10 times.
It develops the characters a lot more than the movie.

    Read the book its outstanding.

My Mom read it and sent it to me. I thought the name was kind of dumb and put off reading it for a while. When I started I could not put it down.

The Movie was good but the book is much better as is usually the case. I think the only 3 movies that were as good or better than the book were IMNSHO: Star Wars, Lawrence of Arabia and The big Sleep. I would give Dr Zhivago high marks it was a great film and did the book justice.

I have a used paperback copy you can have, if you want it. And yes, as good as the movie was, the book is better.

In my humble opinion, reading the book first made the movie a lot better. The book really developed the characters and that made the movie much better

    And streets of Laredo

    God bless LM
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

Wasn't the book written after the movie?? I thought it was (unlike many screenplays).

Nope, not exactly sure when it was first published but I finished reading it about 6 months or a year before Lonesome Dove the movie premiered in 88 or 89.

Book came before the movie, and was a Pulitzer prize winner.

This is a case of do it in reverse, watch before you read.

When you read the book you can actually visualize Robert Duvall as Ranger CPT Agustus McCrae.

The part of Woodrow Call doesn't play as strong in the book as Tommy Lee Jones part does in the Mini Series. The book shows a lot of CPT Call's short comings, and explains why Tommy Lee Jones does some of the things he does on the show.

There are also a few other characters that show up in the book that are not in the show, and it really adds to it in a good way.

I really liked the part about the small mean Texas Long Horn Bull that CPT Call insisted on bringing along. If you ever worked cattle you will like this story line.

The original screen-play for Lonesome Dove was based on the book of course, but was written back in the late 60's. It was intended for John Wayne to play the part of CPT Call, and for Jimmy Stewart to play CPT McCrae.

    Enjoy the book.

Believe me I have many and read some over again After awhile. My copy may be here now. I'll get started reading it when I get home. Thanks again.
