As some of you may remember about March 9 my Dad, 93 yrs old, had hip replacement surgery as hed had taken a fall a few days earlier. He spent 3 weeks in the hospital as he went from serious to critical to stable. Between my sister and self we covered about 19 hrs a day by his side.

When he was finally discharged, we put him in a surgical rehab facility where he supposedly was given(supposedly) physical theraphy daily. This place was a medicare mill. If you wanted a cup of water I swear they'd bill you for it, but, that's another story.

When it came time to get him moved back to assisted living the lady at the rehab place said he'd be out in 2-3 days. It took 9 days! No more inept people or organization have I ever encountered. Also, it is frightening what our seniors face should they need to go to one of these places. Just hope if you do that you will have friends or family to visit at odd hours to insure you're being taken care of.

Well, that's where I've been the past 8-9 weeks, if you care. There has been no work to speak of, which has been good so I could be with dad almost daily. Hope to be back chatting regularly soon.

Greeker

Sorry to hear about your situation.

Get your dad out of there. He wiped your *, now you can return the favor. Our family takes car of their elders in the home.

If you can swing it. Try to give him a good time before he passes. The mills just keep him alive and pumped full of meds to make money.

The VA did this to my Grandpa and I want revenge.

I don't know what I will do when the time comes that I cannot take care of myself.....but I do know that the women in my family have a great track record for taking care of the elderly in my family. It was during my turn to take care of my Great Grandmother (Bigmama) that she passed. She was 97 and I was 28. My Grandmother, two Aunts and my Mother took turns staying with her in her room at my Grandmother's. We also tried a few nurses...but after they stole from my Grandmother they were let go. It is a special thing to take care of someone that helped raised you....and hard to see them suffer, but a lot better knowing the very most is being done for them.

After I had my broken back repaired, I had to spend three weeks in one here - called "Skilled Nursing Facilities" -SNFs - I barely escaped with my life.

My graveyard shift RN probably trained at Bergen-Belsen. She was intentionally cruel. Torture is the only word that adequately describes the experience.

Luckily, I was maybe 15 to 20 years younger than most of the patients, so retained some of my mental faculties.

When I got out and was fully recovered, I went to the Administrator, demanding she be fired. She was. Then I went to a Board of Directors' meeting demanding that the Administrator be fired. He was.

As long as I am able to speak, I will never again allow myself to be placed in one of those places.

Death would have not been a lot worse.

    You have my profound sympathy.

When I was living in Ca. I was a Maintenance Supervisor at a hospital that had a SNF unit. If I told you what I saw at that place you would never allow your family to spend a day in a SNF.
