Are Intel chips better than AMD??

Why do computers with INTEL chips cost more?

Is there any difference in quality or life expectancy of one over the other?

Intel is better, but the price shows it. Check out anandtech.com. There you can compare cpu vs cpu.

If your doing pc gaming or grapic design then you may want Intel, otherwise AMD is good for the price.

As for quality and lifespan. They both have good, great, and bad batches of cpu.
Lets say they shoot for a cpu that runs at 3.6ghz. First batch may only run at 3.2 without problems, those 3.2s are sold as a cheaper model.

One thing to keep in mind is that Intel has had recalls on their sandy bridge cpu and their new ivy bridge cpu is rumored to be itching for a recall also

Back when I was in the semi conductor industry, Intel was always at the top of the heap because of the equipment that we supplied them in microchip manufacturing. I worked at Watkins-Johnson in the early 80's
where one of our scientist developed a Conveyor furnace "C.V.D." (Chemical Vapor Deposition) Then later S.M.T (Surface Mount Technology) then later LPCVD (Low Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition).

So in short, Once the cat was out of the bag of how to make computer chips every one was doing it. One thing that I can say is Intel will always be on top, what I can't say is why they will remain #1 unless they sell that technology in which I highly doubt.

Fun, used to be the other way around - AMD for graphics, Intel for more office/calcuations.

I like Ruffles better than either of those...

I routinely spanked P3 systems that had an equal cost to my AMD machine - the fact that mine had 2 physical processors probably had a bit to do with it. Dual k2-1800 cpus... could crank the seti units out like mad. Machine prior to that was a dual cpu intel box, with 2 p2-450s.

Basically, unless you have code that is *very* optimized for the hardware, either will do you fine - spend your savings on maxing out your ram and you won't be unhappy.

I've always preferred a computer with an Intel processor.
