I have a 12 year old son who is not real big for his age. He is 4'8" tall and weighs 90 pounds. He loves to hunt. He can climb mountains all day long. Even though he is not real big he can shoot deer and antelope off hand with a .270 and that caliber don't bother him a bit. He has pretty good strength.

He wants to start hunting with a bow and arrow this next fall and would like to shoot an antelope with his bow. He needs to take his bow hunter education this spring. ALthough he has decent stength it is still real hard for him to pull a bow back.

What kind of bow would be good to get him started on? Is there any that would fit him so he could hunt with it this fall?

Look for a Hoyt Rucus. The draw weight has a big adjustment and draw length should be able to go down far enough for him.

Start off with the draw weight low and work his way up.

It is good you are starting now. He has all spring and summer to shoot. For some reason kids seem to be naturals as long as they are given a piece of equipment that fits them and doesn't tire them out.

I would take him to your local archery shop and have him fitted for a bow and get him in a few classes. My son is 6 years old and the shop around here does a great job with him.

It is better to let the pros get him started so he will enjoy it and have the right equipment.

You might check and see if your state has a minimum draw weight like mine does. Then I would go from there....bull

Also u could buy a cheap used recurve to help strengthen his arms and help out his aim. I'm 6th tall 195 lbs and fairly strong.... When I'm using my bow( compound Hoyt ) my arm holding the bow always gets tired before the pulling arm. Shootin bows is fun for everyone. Ur lucky ur son wants to. My daughter will shoot guns, but a Big No to bows or even hunting in general.

    I started with a longbow, went to a recurve,then to a compound...now i'm back to a longbow...nothin like traditional..

get him measured at a shop...nothing worse than a bow that dont fit

There are a few makers that produce youth compound bows with adjustable draw length and draw weight.

My son shoots 4H Archery and has an adjustable Mission Menace bow.
