What are the features on survival guns that separate them from non-survival guns; and what results are they expected to accomplish?

From what I can tell, packability and portability.
Some will die in hot pursuit
    And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
    While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
    Coming down the mountain

Depends on the situation, in a non hostile situation a good accurate 22lr is all you need to take most game to survive. In a hostile or mabe hostile situation i would have an accurate ar type rifle as my primary survival rifle, this rifle can serve very well as a defensive weapon and can also take deer sized game. I would also have an accurate 22lr pistol for small game. Shotguns are useless unless its in your house IMHO

I agree that unless you think you are going to face down scores of people that the 22LR should not be overlooked:

    1. Lightweight
    2. Lower noise
    3. Great for small game and old timers were taking deer with them
    4. More ammo per pound versus centerfire

The odds are one will be on the move or holed up in a remote area where the need will be primarily food foraging followed with some occasions of defending the location.

It has to take a beating and neglect, still go bang then put meat down or on the plate.

Seems to me that what are being referred to as survival guns are actually stow-away guns. Their strong points are that they can be fit into a small area and add only a small amount of weight. The weak points are virtually everythng else when compared to a standard rifle. As such, it seems to me that a better alternative to a stubbed off rifle would be an accurate .22lr pistol. With training & practice a shooter can be as accurate with one as with the rifle, given similar sights. The packability and weight will be less than the rifle and will allow for holstering which allows someone to use both hands for other activities.

Ray, you have a point, but the pistol just won't give the 22lr the punch and range that a take-down rifle will.

Get a GLOCK and an AK. You'll be fine. [;)]
