It does apply to each and every election for president in each state. They are each and every one a classic democracy. The results of those democratic elections are compiled by the electoral college.
You are free to feel as you wish, but the reality is that for many years 'republic' and 'democracy' were used interchangeably. The Framers outlined the distinction they desired in the application in our system.
A representative republic such as ours is a form of democracy. It does not diminish the impact of our system by saying so, any more than saying a scalpel is a type of knife makes it less sharp.
