out-of-state Oregon permit

Hmmmm. . .where should I begin with this? Don't know if this topic belong's in the "ask the experts" board but since those topics get locked after a few replies, I thought this place would be better suited because I have a feeling this topic could go on for a while. . .

So my story goes like this. I live in Washington (state. . .not D.C. thank goodness) and plan on getting a permit to carry for the border state of Oregon. I know for a solid fact that yes I can apply for the Oregon permit but the "may" issue of the signing sheriff is solely at their discretion. Anyways before I head over to Oregon I wanted to gain some insight as to which county I'd most likely get my permit approved/signed at/in.

So I've done a little research and looked up two different counties that are in the area I live closest to, they are Multnomah and Columbia County. For Columbia county it says I must personally write a letter to the sheriff explaining why I'd like an Oregon permit. . .something of which kinda gives me the feeling this guy won't approve it.

Now for Multnomah county, their website says they'll grant Washington residents the permit but since their office is in Portland (a fairly non-gun friendly city. . .), I have my doubts about them.

I'm definitely looking forward to hearing back on this.

Look at some counties further east. I'd wager that pigs will fly before you could get one in Multnomah county and Columbia might be tough too. Wasco County or Sherman might be easier.
Where are ya and how far are you willing to go?

50 miles or so? Just as long I don't have to driver clear to Eastern OR to get it.

You will not get one in Multnomah county you would do better to try in Hood or possibly Clackamas counties. You will have to take the Oregon appoved CHL class (which is offered in Multnomah Co.).

50 miles from where? If you're serious about a permit I'd think 50 miles would be a walk in the park.

No disrepect to you but I am not revealing where I live at. . .thats the same as telling the bad guys where to rob me at.

I do have a friend who got his permit in Columbia County. Think I'll go there.

Sheriff Palmer in Grant County will issue you a non-res CCW. Great guy, he makes trips to CA to do them for us. Got mine a few years back.

Sheriff of Hood River county will not issue out of state permits. Got mine in Wasco county, about a 40 mile drive one way for me. Took my class in Hood River at a friends gun shop. The instructor was a HR cop, nice guy, told us straight up that HR county sheriff wouldn't issue out of state permit.

Does the state of Oregon issue "Non Resident" permits? Or do they recognize the permit from your home state? If so why the need?

Yup, I went to high school with him. I think he was two years behind me. He's a good one. Of course Grant county is probably too far out of the OP's way, it is just a bit in the middle of nowhere! A few years back the residents voted to make the county a UN-free zone.

Oregon doesn't recognize any other state's permit. Washington won't recognize Oregon permits so I also had to get a Utah permit. It'd sure be easier if the permits were recognized state to state like drivers licenses!

No kidding. Better yet, do away with the permits altogether!

From What I hear Washington and Clackamas counties are supposed to be easier to get than Multnomah. Reminds me I need to go take the class and get my Oregon permit.

For those Vets going to get an Oregon CCW. If your DD-214 says Pistol Expert the class is waived. But it must be on your DD-214.

Get on your state legislators about changing the Acceptance of other state permits..

I am currently envolved in doing away with the permits here in florida but am meeting a lot of obstacles.

Florida recognizes Washingtons so I guess Washington must recognize Florida????????

    FLORIDA'S RECIPROCITY STATES Alabama (1,3,5) Alaska (1) Arizona (6) Arkansas (1) Colorado (1,4) Delaware, Georgia (1) Idaho (3,6) Indiana (1,3,6) Iowa (6) Kansas (1) Kentucky Louisiana (1) Michigan (1,4) Mississippi (1) Missouri, Montana (3) Nebraska (1) New Hampshire (1,3,4,6) New Mexico (1) North Carolina (1) North Dakota (3,6) Ohio (1) Oklahoma (1) Pennsylvania (1,6) South Carolina (1,4,6) South Dakota (1,3) Tennessee (1,6) Texas (1,3,6) Utah (1,6) Vermont (2) Virginia (1,6) Washington (1,6) West Virginia (1) Wyoming (1,3)
