Fox Baltimore station evacuated after man threatened to set off bomb

Police evacuated the offices of Fox 45 Baltimore Thursday afternoon after a man lit a car on fire in the parking lot, walked into the building's lobby and threatened to set off a bomb, the station reported.

The man appeared to be wearing a bulky suit. The news station reports he made the bomb threat to a security guard in the lobby.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and extinguished the fire.

Police were on scene at the FOX Baltimore building on Thursday.

A man in a panda suit claimed to have `a bomb strapped to his chest' and reportedly walked into the lobby of Fox 45, WJZ reported.

A car was also apparently on fire outside of the station. The blaze was put out.

The suspect gave a flash drive with video to staff, saying he has a message to get out, George Solis of WJZ tweeted.

The scene is at West 41st Street.

The police counter-sniper (sic) shot him in the leg. (Huh? They thought the guy was a sniper in panda PJ's, so they had to call in a counter-sniper?)

They then allowed him to lie bleeding in the street, until the police explosives robot could undress him. He was then transported to the Shock Trauma Center. Condition is still secret.

Update: Baltimore City Police have said that, under the hedge hog costume that he was wearing, was a vest with numerous pockets, filled with chocolate bars wrapped in aluminum foil with wires sticking out. He was carrying some type of IED, which most of us would call a "flash drive", as well as a "motherboard, like you would find in a fire extinguisher".

This is starting to sound like a made for TV prank, except for the real bullets.

I told my wife the LEO was a terrible shot to say the least ..
the fellow flinched and kept walking ,,after the first shot then a second shot to get on the ground and still alive .. must be a ex-gang member doing the shooting ..\\ so much for taking out some one with a potential bomb strapped to them and trigger in there hand ..

It doesn't make much sense in this sort of situation, but that looks like less-lethal rounds at first with little effect. Then a head shot.

Of course, it also doesn't make much sense to engage someone believed to be wearing an explosive vest from out in the open and only 20-25 yds. away.

...the first few shots were "less lethal" rounds. Ineffective as evidenced on the video. The final shot was to stop the individual carrying a professed explosive device once the less lethal was found not to do the job and he continued to approach the perimeter. It's a bomb until it's not one. Panda boy created this mess. Given the circumstances you'd be out of your mind to approach until a firm determination is made as to wether he is in fact wired, carrying a follow-on device, etc.

Edit: Txs, I agree on the distance factor. The after action critique should be a detailed one. It was a unique situation for the team. Fortunately the "lessons learned" will be many.
