Dano, when I was 16 I had an incident with a police officer that shattered my faith in LEOs for a long time.I was pulled over on my way home from work at approximately 10:30 at night on a Friday night. I worked at a Burger King. After checking my license, before even telling me what the matter was, he told me I was breaking the law by being out past my 9 PM junior license driving curfew.I told him I'd been working at BK and was on my way home. The officer said he didnt believe me, I had been driving erratically, and he asked if I had been out partying. I told him that was ridiculous, I didnt drink, and I had my uniform in the back seat if he wanted to see it. I reached for it on the back seat, he screamed at me, pulled his gun, and grabbed me by my collar and dragged me out of the car.He proceeded to cuff me, frisk me, push me face down on the grass on the side of Western Avenue and search my entire car top to bottom. He even ripped off my new naughahyde seat covers I'd gotten for my birthday so he could search under them for contraband. Of course, he didnt find a damn thing.I'll admit it now, I was so scared I cried. He finished with my car in about 15 minutes and, without another word, uncuffed me, got in his car, and left. I was so shaken by the experience I didnt think to get his badge or car number. I never told my parents. Frankly, I was afraid of what might happen if I said anything.I dont think he even bothered to do any paperwork on the incident. He taught that punk kid a lesson about who was boss, and that was all there was to it. And although I've tried to put it out of my mind, the suspicion still lingers, and I havent really ever gotten over it.But when I hear stories about cops like you, cops who are willing to put their own * in the hospital to protect the innocent, I regain faith in the police. Little by little.Because I know most of you are as dedicated to serving the public as you can be, and that cops like the one I met that night in Guilderland don't speak for the whole organization. Its because of cops like you Dano that I havent lost all faith. So be glad you are who you are. And dont ever forget it.Addendum: A year or so ago, five cops from that same precinct (I have no idea whether the one who harassed me was among them) were busted for patronizing hookers and paying them with confiscated crack and methamphetamines. From what I read in the paper they lost their badges and pensions, but most of all, they lost the respect of the people. Thats a lot to lose.

I'm confused....I've seen Dano portrayed here as a "Homer Simpson" type eating donuts and working at the local Dairy Queen....now the image is a guy in red tights with a blue cape fighting crime on behalf of "Truth...Justice...and the American Way"....Rumor has it there are two Dano's, I've probably got the two mixed up....(Seriously, Good Job Dano!, appreciate your efforts)

Once again Great Job Dano! My son took the test to become a U.S. Marshall back in early summer, Just found out yesterday that he did not pass the test. He thinks because of the memory portion. So he is going to continue working for Sedgwick County as an Intensive Supervision officer and maybe try to get on the Sheriff patrol later.(He has a degree in Admistration of Justice) It was a big let down for him. I went over to his house and tried to prop him up a little but he was really down about it. The only thing about it that I am thankfull about is the fact that he probably won't have to move away from home now...Auto

Rembrandt--Let me remind you of our previous conversation. It's "pastries" not donuts. We like to retain a bit of class when it comes to our eating habits (LEO's and Recruiters).P.S. I stopped at the Owatonna, MN Cabela's yesterday morning on my way home from Minnesota. I took a look at those "smoking jackets". Did you see the ones they had in Mossy Oak?[This message has been edited by idsman75 (edited 12-28-2001).]

It's great to see you back on-line. Stay safe........I got the birthday info on you and Dano Too and added to the Birthday Club database. Where was he when you needed him? -Charlie

Dano....As a LEO some would say the action you took was your duty, your responsibility, and your obligation to the public. From the sound of things I'd say you went above and beyond all three. Hope your wound heals up ok and that you know there're many of us out here who appreciate the boys in blue like you.

Dano, first I would reiterate the kudos others have posted. I had an unfortunate experience w/ a NJ state trooper in my youth many years ago that really alienated me for a long time, but I came to realize that he was not representative of the profession, whereas your actions epitomize the courage and dedication of our LEO community. Glad you are OK; kinda missed the stirring.

What Dano failed to mention was that he took on two adult men. One had a felony warrant out on him for child sexual abuse. Dano also didnt mention that he was seriously cut during the melee. One of the men was hit so hard by Dano to his throat it crushed his windpipe and almost suffocated. The other guy got his right arm broken at his elbow. Dano required sutures to his chest from the knife attack. Sorry Dano, the whole story had to be told.
