Differences: I was riding an ATV, and doing 15 mph when I went by a black bear (about 15 feet away and the bear was by himself). I had seen the bear about 3 minutes earlier and he was booking over a ridge (about 100 yards away) after seeing me coming down a dirt Forest service road. I rounded the ridge (still on the dirt road) and thought that if the bear kept moving he would be right about...
I saw him, he saw me, at about 15 feet and he swapped ends and dismantled the brush he went into. I tried to look back, but not wanting to go off the road and down 1,000 feet to Hazard Lake all I could make out was fat, shiny coat, and dismantling the brush.
I saw bear tracks all week long, at all the lakes I visited (about 12 lakes) in the Brundage area.

I had a close encounter with a black bear last week.

That's one main difference between black bears and griz. Black bears typically run from you (unless they've been otherwise conditioned) and griz... well, they're unpredictable.
And fiery auto crashes
Some will die in hot pursuit
While sifting through my ashes
Some will fall in love with life
And drink it from a fountain
That is pouring like an avalanche
Coming down the mountain
I wonder if he was armed and they just happened on the bear and he had no chance to defend himself? He was a career Forest Service LEO, and was taken off the bike by the bear. Makes it sound like maybe they were ambushed.
That's my guess. Bikes moving with a little speed and not much noise. Came up on and surprised the sow before she could round up the cups and get. Bear did what bears do and he didn't have time to do anything about it. Not only has he a Forest Service Officer he also grew up in the area, so he was aware and experienced concerning bears. Sometimes things just happen.

It's easy to get too comfortable in your environment. You can get pretty numb to the danger if you're not actively reminding yourself of the circumstances.
