Priority Mail shipping charge--ridiculous

Ran across a seller's charge for shipping a small handgun.

Shipping: Priority Mail $55.00

That's totally ridiculous. Like his gun; but, his shipping charge will keep me from bidding.

A small handgun shouldn't be more than $12-$15 including "handling charges".

items total value to you - ffl fees - shipping fees - any and all other fees = max bid. if it goes over that figure, then its too rich for your blood.

    its really that simple.

If this person is NOT an FFL class 01 dealer it is not legal for him to ship VIA USPS. if he ships UPS or FEDEX more then likely it will cost him MORE THAN$55.00

EDITunless I travel 40 + miles my local dealers do not ship USPS or if they do they charge $50.00 that does not include insurance. some places cost more then others Email the seller and get his story. One reason I don't sell handguns on this site.

USPS is the cheapest way to ship a handgun. Doesn't cost any more than any other package of equal value. Seller is padding his price. I either subtract the exorbitant shipping from the bid I make or just don't bid. I might even send an email letting the seller know he's ripping the bidders and crapping on his auction.
I don't follow the principal of charging postage, boxing fee, packaging, the gas to drive to the PO, and whatever else they can think up to make an extra $. To me, that's the price of doing business.

Is it an expensive handgun? If so, the insurance will seriously jack up the mailing cost.

I just had a guy inquire about the high shipping on a big ticket handgun. I told him I would happily ship it un-insured for $15.00, but he would have to assume the risk of loss or damage in transit.

    Priority Mail Insurance

    $0.01 to $50 $1.80
    50.01 to 100 2.30
    100.01 to 200 2.85
    200.01 to 300 4.75
    300.01 to 400 5.80
    400.01 to 500 6.85
    500.01 to 600 7.90
    600.01
    (maximum
    liability is
    $5000)
    to 5,000 $7.90 plus $1.05 per $100 or
    fraction thereof over $600 in
    declared value

On a $2,000 gun, it can add up.

    It depends.

Some folks (like me) will ship it for less than it actually costs them, to avoid complaints about shipping overcharge.

FFL's in my area charge $50-60 to ship a handgun. But, I don't blame them; USPS doesn't make pick ups at your store. You have to drive down to the post office & stand in line, like everyone else. Unless you are a big seller who can average the cost over a large number of guns, there goes an hour of your time on 1 transaction.

It is your option to bid or not, but you know about the charges up front, so all is fair.

On E b a y they call it skirting the Auction fees.
