I am considering buying an AR-15 type system and I would like some different opinions on the multitude of manufacturers. Generally speaking I am looking for a carbine length chambered in .223 flat top with a railed fore end. I want to find an AR that I can improve as time go on if I want to. So lemme hear what you have to say.

Bushy or Colt, last time I checked.
Sorry about the less than warm welcome but you should have known better than to ask a gun related question on a gun forum.
Hip waders and some thick skin will serve you well.
Welcome!

Get over yourself, Kev. You know....you could just skip the topic....what a novel idea.
Well, actually, it's NOT a novel idea....I have seen you tell people that a few times.

ok, they best ar is the one you build yourself, you get an education on how the inner workings work, you learn to fix it, tweak it, and become far more proud of it than one bought off the shelf
+1
You really should check out some of the numerous online videos of how to build an AR, you'll be amazed how easy it is. Brownells' vids are a good start.
When you build it yourself you get exactly what you want and you will have an intimate knowledge of the firearm, something money can't buy.

And are not paying for crap you don't want.
Why buy M-4 handguards when you know you are going to put Quad rails on it, same for a 2 stage trigger.

good way to welcome new members, that is the central ethos of my thought.
my advice is to look at the auction side at the prices. You will find cheapos for $500, used good ones for $750-$1250 and somw top of the line guns for $1250-$1500.
I absolute positively say find a good used Colt SP1 and then work form their. Replace the handguards, the stock, add this or subtract that. You might have more in the gun, but when you decided to get rid of it, you will get your money back.
