Scope refinish ???'s

I have and old redfield 2X that I want to use on a Python.
the original finish looks like a stainless top coat over a white (grey) metal. the top finish is badly worn.
I was thinking of sand blasting down to the base metal and the finishing in gun blue of black.
is there a better way to prep the scope for painting?
will I screw up the scope by sand blasting it?
thanks!

Where are the lenses and reticle and all the guts going to be when you blast it? (Please don't say, "Still inside the scope").What kind of media? Are you aware of stress relief from blasting?
the blaster isn't one of theose big commercial units, its for equipment parts. has a 50 pound grit tank.
I guess I'll just hand sand it and hope it comes out as good as Cartod's!
thanks!
