i hate those pop ups in the bathroom sink, they clog easily, well anyway, it did it again, had to pull it all out, but this time i went to the hardware store and replaced to whole damn thing with an open drain, got rid of the pop up, going to buy a screen to cath item small enough to pass through the four little tits that stick out inside the drain

now here is where i got locust forked [8D]

put it all back together, guess what?, still clogged, its past the S trap, into the wall, ok i have a snake, but where?, searched for a good hour and a half, no luck, getting stressed by the minute, good 3 hours into the endeavour, i must have loaned it out, call a friend, went and borrowed one, viola! running free as it never ran before

is it over? of course not, the new drain is not lining up with the old S trap exactly strait, just a tad cocked enough to make it leak a drip, hopefully the putty will set enough or i'm going to have to put a flex pipe in

20-30 minute job, stretched out 3-4 hours %$&@*!

I've got one of those pop ups in my bathroom as well. My wife wanted one of those sinks that hang over the cabinet. There 's no way in hell that drain lined up any where near that sink drain. I've got about 5-6 sections of every type of drain pipe, plastic pipe, pvc and what have you to get that thing to work. There wasn't one store within 10 miles of my house that had all the pieces in one type of drain pipe. That thing still drips on occasion.

    PVC?
use the pvc glue on the threads. no more leak.
metal? Locktight blue and cotton string.
of course, you'll need a hacksaw for future mods, but.......
    hey, it works for me.

its not the pvc part, on top you you have the drain flange, putty under that, drain pipe with overflow holes go through the sink about 1.5", under neath there is a rubber gasket, then the locking nut, this part must stay in perfect alignment, or it will leak, you cannot over tighten it or the flange will cock just a fraction of a mm, and leak, when i add the S trap pipe it moves the flange, just a hair enough to leak, ive wrestled with each of the pvc connection compression fittings, and cannot get it straight

i'll straighten in the morning after i take a rest from it

to be a plumber you have to drink beer for breakfast, graduate to wine at lunch and then be smart and go back to beer for dinner..
Although always described as a cowboy, Roswellnative generally acts as a righter of wrongs or bodyguard of some sort, where he excels thanks to his resourcefulness and incredible gun prowesses.

    Pppfffftttt
Just use a little RTV on the joint before you assemble it, it will seal any misalignment and come apart....
+ Yank the pipe pit of the wall & replace it with 1-1/2" PVC
    Don

I hate those pop up drain seals.

I remember when I was a kid, you had a rubber cork on a chain to seal the drain. Worked real well. Simple.
