STURGEON BAY - A fisherman rescued from ice that had broken away from the shore of Green Bay this weekend was unaware that he was drifting away, officials said.

Chief Curt Vandertie of the Brussels-Union-Gardner Fire Department also said it was the second year in a row that the same fisherman got into such a predicament.

Vandertie said the Elmhurst, Ill., man would receive a bill this time for the cost of the emergency rescue.

Bystanders called 911 about 5:30 a.m. Sunday to report that the man, estimated to be 50 years old, was floating away in the dark on a large chunk of ice south of Castaway's bar and grill near Sturgeon Bay.

Vandertie said rescuers used spotlights and an inflatable raft to reach the man about 600 yards offshore and safely return him to shore. He told rescuers he had been fishing since about 3:30 a.m.
