spencer rifle, any good?

In "unforgiven" (clint eastwood) everyone talks about the spencer rifle with great respect, almost reverance.
were they really that highly thought of back in the "old west"?
what was the cost, compared to say, a winchester 1873?
are they considered accurate when compared to todays long guns?
and lastly, any replicas being made? (rossi?)thanks

Yea...Well I just got through pricing the rifles, not bad, less than a grand. The ammo costs about $35/round. That's too rich for this tinknocker's blood. I'll stick with my .22's
