I got this e-mail from my daughter who is in the Navy. Her husband is a former Marine, and this young Marine was his best frined when they were in Iraq. Please read, and may God bless you & yours if it strikes you to help this family if only in prayer.

Dad,

Please send this to everyone you know. Mike has been fighting a rare form of cancer for the past 3 years and after having gone into remission........ its back. Mike and Kelly Baker are very close Friends of ours. Mike and Chad deployed to Iraq together and Kelly was there for Nicks birth. This family needs all the prayers and support they can get!!!

Thanks,

Erica

Please be very cautious with this. I'm not saying it is a scam, but there are similar scams out there, preying on people who support the military.
2 things concern me right off the bat:
If he is a Marine sergeant, why is there Army sergeant rank insignia on the home page?
If he is a Marine sergeant, why isn't his treatment paid for by Tricare?

If TS's daughter knows this Marine, then it's probably on the level, but please be cautious with this sort of thing.

    CC,
I know the Baker Family, I grew up with the SGT's aunts, (one of my best friends is married to one of them). I can assure you it is legit, I also posted about this last year.

Just nagging Questions. If he is no longer on Active duty, why is the VA not part of this. If he is still active again why not Tri-Care.

Reason I ask I had a heart Attack while on Active duty. 2 years ago the VA found I had some more clogged Arteries. Dec 06 the VA did a By-Pass surgery on my, I was 100% covered and during the reecovery time I was paid 100% Disability.

    Just wondering.

quote:As far as what the military pays for, they have been extremely generous and Mike and Kelly feel fortunate to have them, for they have gotten Mike to this point. Unfortunately, they do not pay for any type of experimental treatments and we've been led to believe that this is our only hope right now. Mike also needs assistance in travel expenses for him to get from the base in NC to MD Anderson and the Mayo Clinic. Some travel expenses will be reimbursed through the military down the road, but Mike and Kelly are in need of our assistance as soon as possible. They feel strongly that anything that is not used will be donated back into cancer research. Things are very difficult for them right now and with the aggressive path this cancer has taken, they need to act immediately.

A Sergeant's salary does not cover the expenses for what Mike needs and we are determined to find him the right treatment, no matter what it takes!

He is one of thousands that the VA and military are doing this to, I feel for him. I could have sworn I saw this same type scenario on CNN where the families incurred costs for visiting their loved ones in the military hospital. This really needs to be addressed more by the government paying expenses of those who serve our country. I know travel expesnses should be covered by the VA since they are making him travel to that hospital to see the doctors. If he is active duty his military orders would pay for travel. However the cost for his family going with him would not be covered.

I'll help- as I donated for the late Gunny Carlos Hathcock- aka- L'ong Tran- White Feather- but the other Gyrene is right- those are US Army E-5 (buck Sgt.) Chevrons- not the USMC Colors- and the adage "All The Way" comes from the Army's Airborne Divisions- Just as ours (USMC Recon) comes from the Latin- as does the British SAS Air Commandos- "Assistance From a Distance" also means "If You Can Read This, Our Snipers Can Drop You In A Heartbeat"!! Semper Fi to all on deck here. OG
