Somehow this seems wrong, does it only happen in the gun world?
I've often wondered about: paying to get into a store to spend money.

No, it happens in most shows of this type. Camera, model trains, car & truck, antiques, and most other specialty shows all charge admission. Most of these shows are put on by promoters, and/or clubs. They have to pay for the venue, security, and a host of other charges that the venue can dream up. And you have to realize that clubs do this to raise money for their club expenses, and promoters charge to make a living.
What you're paying for is the convenience of having all those dealers and their variety of wares for sale in one location. If you had to drive all over to see the same stuff at the dealers stores, you would have way more invested in the price of gas, and the time it took to travel.

I understand the question. On a similar note, when I was 14 or so I came home wearing a T-shirt bearing the word "Nike" (and the logo, of course). My dad asked me if they were paying me to wear the shirt.
Bubba is right, though. You get to see a lot of stuff under one roof. If you're looking for a particular item, you might find several, and then you make your best deal. That won't happen at Gander Mt. Also, I've seen things at gun shows that I had only ever read about in books, e.g. the .45 ACP Liberator pistol, or the German STG 44. Won't see that at Cabela's.
