In another thread, a couple of peeps referred to rolled oats and canning them. Can someone explain this ? I eat oatmeal, and have never heard of canning oats ? Is it the same oats that come out of my round box ? Thanks

Rolled Oats are usually bough in bulk. 50 or so pound bags.

    Canning them is fairly easy.

Heat the oven to around 225 to 250 degrees and no higher.
Fill the jars to within 1/4-1/2 from the top.
Wipe the rims clean (important). Place on the lid (cap) and ring.
Lay the jars on their side in the oven.
    Bake for 45-60 minutes.
Take the jars out of the oven and stand them upright. Careful doing this. For the jars can explode if touched by damp or sweaty hands or if they are set on something to cold like a counter top. A warm towel is good for handling them and sitting them on.
It will take a few minutes for the caps to seal. You will hear them pop when they do.
Once the jars are cool. Check to make sure that they sealed.
    You're done.

I get the 50 lb bags of rolled oats for $16 from a local grocer. Have no idea about canning unless you mean the 5 gal bucket [:D]

A halthy alternative prep for oatmeal with no dairy or sugar is :

    banana, 1
    oats, 1/2 cup
    almonds, a dozen or so
    dates, 3 large medjool

Soak the oats, almonds and dates in water overnight. The next morning place in drainer then the processor with the banana. Blend. Add cinnamon if desired.

    That's it!

How about sealing them up in a jar with a vacuum sealer? Anyone tried that?
