Kerosene or Diesel Fuel?

GuvamintCheeseGuvamintCheese Member Posts: 38,932

I vaguely remember putting diesel fuel in a kerosene container some time ago. Is there any way to make sure this is indeed diesel and not kerosene? My kids tell me that this year I get to hide my own Easter eggs.

Thanks.

what are you using it for? If it is for a diesel motor the kerosene shouldn't hurt it not a few gallons anyway, if it is for a heater, the diesel may smoke more than kerosene. If it is off road diesel it will be red.....

The diesel will most likely be green.

If you still have a good smeller you can tell the difference from the smell.

very easy to tell. get a clear jar, and pour some in. kerosene will be almost clear, like water. diesel will be alot darker. very simple.

It has a green tint to it. I can't tell the difference by smelling it. I'm running it in my tractor.

Kerosene won't hurt a Diesel engine? That's good to know..

kerosene wont hurt it, unless it is straight kerosene. kerosene doesnt have as much lubrication in it as diesel fuel, so you could hurt the injectors or pump. if running straight kerosene, add about 1 quart of oil for every 2 gallons of kerosene, and you will be fine.

Put it in your tractor and run it.. Kerosene is just highly refined diesel fuel, almost jet fuel.

If it is a yellowish green color it is regular over the road diesel, and is just fine for any diesel engine.

Pour a small amount into a small bowl and throw a lite match in it....Kero will light, diesel likely will not.......

my guess would be no!! coleman fuel, like gasoline, burns from the fumes. whereas with diesel, the liquid burns, or that is my understanding in simple terms.

most coleman products are dual or triple fuel now. Some use coleman fuel, the older stuff. The newer stuff use coleman fuel, unleaded or the min propane cans.

    Not sure they burn diesel.

My Coleman stove states that I can cook with White Gas, unleaded, or kerosene.
It has a few little parts to swap for the different fuel though. Like the feed tube diameter if I remember right.

I have only ever used white gas though.

    What is white gas?

I have seen people use alcohol (rubbing) in the lanterns, but they are not as bright. (Don will hit that one out of the park)

Diesel fuel has a pretty strong odor. Kerosene has almost none.

Kerosene is clear, like water, diesel fuel is dyed either green (on road) or red (off road).

Either will work fine in a heater but the diesel will emit a stronger smell.

Hard to tell the difference between gasoline and JP8 by sniffing it. Apparently the Secret Service can't tell the difference either [:D]

Coleman fuel is Naphtha with a very small amount of oil added to it, to increase the flash temperature.
