Man coming in the morning to pick up a trailer load of scrap. I don't mess with it going to the scrap yard.

I keep copper and aluminum scrap and turn it in when I have enough to bother. Steel pays so little I don't bother with it.
Why don't we go to school and work on the weekends and take the week off!

I don't get any quantity of AL or steel. I do recycle copper and brass. I have quite a bit of brass which needs breaking down. Now that it is warming up I'll get back to it.

I make a run to the recycler every 3 months or so, mostly plastic bottles, but I take what ever can be taken when I go. I usually leave with $50 for my trouble.

It all adds up. Steel is worth $9.00 a hundred here.

I save copper and aluminum. Got a bunch of windows I need to break out the glass and strip out any steel. Extra hobby money.

I've spent a couple of weekends stealing gutters and siding when the neighbors are out of town.

But there isn't enough money in iron to be worth my time.

my son and one of his friends scrap out cars and trucks if they get the right deal ,
sometimes we have had a old car or two in process of dismantling and that's when we get attention . people stopping by asking if they can have or will haul off the old cars for us [:D]for free
I am polite and explain its my son's project he is hauling off for a few extra $$ .
he does have a few friends that's all they do for a living and do all right , searching and buying or getting freebies to scrap out.

Heck yeah! The scrap yard is one of my favorite places. I usually buy some steel to make stuff with while I am there.

I even help two older guys out when they go just to check out the scrap steel.

Never pass up a chance to go to the scrap yard[:p]

We run a machine shop; so we deal with the scrap yard pretty regular. Beer money and a few extra bucks for the people in the shop.

Aluminum cans (cat food and the occasional beer can) provide our movie money. Takes 18 tons to get enough to see a movie these days.

30 years ago we were small, and had to pay to have it hauled away.

With the volume we are doing today they stage the dumpsters, haul it away and pay us over $ 1,000.00 per month for their trouble.

No, but my neighbor does. Friday every other week is scrap day. He crushes his cans all week and by the end of the second week has about 25 pounds worth. Just weighed a can; it's half an ounce of aluminum. So, that's 32 cans a pound, about 800 cans every 2 weeks. 57 cans a day, he usually goes through about 25 beers a day himself, then goes and empties out all the recycling bins on the block on garbage day, doubling his haul.

Gets about 40 bucks a month.

If I drank like he did it would be worth it, as it sits, no way.

I always put rocks in my aluminum cans before I crush them because they bring a lot more money that way. [:)]

Scrap dealers will drive down the streets in their trucks. People bring out "scrap", can be anything, truck has a scale and they are paid in cash.

No one has rusty appliances laying around their "front yard",, unless of course it is a flagrant display of wealth.

Can also buy scrap items. Bought several old refrigerator coils. Going price is about a buck for small, 1.5 for large.

Great for chicken coop doors, windows and places where animals might try to enter. Easy cutting with a 4-1/2" hand grinder.

Crushed aluminium cans go to the scrap yard once a year and I'm sure a few cigarette butts get tossed in the mix.

A year ago scrap iron topped out at over $200/ton. Last time I checked it was $90. We cleaned up the farm over the last few years, dragging metal out of ditches and fence rows. Most of it sold for around $180/ton; made several thousand bucks;.

Having some acreage allows for the storage of most if not all metals from car projects and anything else.

This practice has paid for two nice Garands and one shooter, ask Mark!![:)]

Wow the variation in price is amazing.. I checked the other day and steel was $80 ton here.... I think the guy getting $40 must be getting hosed..... A guy I work with said the prices tend to follow fuel prices. Claims the worse time to sell is winter spring and best time is in the fall.

I think you need a means to automatically cast 1500 Lb. Sows, badchris.

If you do, please let me know. I know a place that can put a system together for you.

I used to save cans and give them to my neighbor who scraps. He would take his cut and give us the rest.
Now, the high school started a recycling program. We take the cans down there once a week. Figure it goes to a good cause.

We supplied one each to a couple of your competitors in MT. Pleasant, TN over the past 5 - 6 years.

Are you strictly recycling or do you process dross as well?

Dross too. The rotary to the right was melting a heat when I took this picture. Sounds like we share similar career paths.

Also, good luck tomorrow and speedy recovery Don.
