But there isn't enough money in iron to be worth my time.
sometimes we have had a old car or two in process of dismantling and that's when we get attention . people stopping by asking if they can have or will haul off the old cars for us [:D]for free
I am polite and explain its my son's project he is hauling off for a few extra $$ .
he does have a few friends that's all they do for a living and do all right , searching and buying or getting freebies to scrap out.
A lousy $60 a ton.
Shoulda saved it for later.

I even help two older guys out when they go just to check out the scrap steel.
Never pass up a chance to go to the scrap yard[:p]

I've spent a couple of weekends stealing gutters and siding when the neighbors are out of town.

The look on their faces is well worth the weekend of hard labor.
We run a machine shop; so we deal with the scrap yard pretty regular. Beer money and a few extra bucks for the people in the shop.

30 years ago we were small, and had to pay to have it hauled away.
With the volume we are doing today they stage the dumpsters, haul it away and pay us over $ 1,000.00 per month for their trouble.

Gets about 40 bucks a month.
If I drank like he did it would be worth it, as it sits, no way.
No one has rusty appliances laying around their "front yard",, unless of course it is a flagrant display of wealth.
Can also buy scrap items. Bought several old refrigerator coils. Going price is about a buck for small, 1.5 for large.
Great for chicken coop doors, windows and places where animals might try to enter. Easy cutting with a 4-1/2" hand grinder.
I always put rocks in my aluminum cans before I crush them because they bring a lot more money that way. [:)]

A year ago scrap iron topped out at over $200/ton. Last time I checked it was $90. We cleaned up the farm over the last few years, dragging metal out of ditches and fence rows. Most of it sold for around $180/ton; made several thousand bucks;.
This practice has paid for two nice Garands and one shooter, ask Mark!![:)]
I prefer my aluminum in the molten state.
I think you need a means to automatically cast 1500 Lb. Sows, badchris.
If you do, please let me know. I know a place that can put a system together for you.

Now, the high school started a recycling program. We take the cans down there once a week. Figure it goes to a good cause.
Don, there is a carousel just out of view. I can't show all my toys [;)].
We supplied one each to a couple of your competitors in MT. Pleasant, TN over the past 5 - 6 years.
Are you strictly recycling or do you process dross as well?

Dross too. The rotary to the right was melting a heat when I took this picture. Sounds like we share similar career paths.
Also, good luck tomorrow and speedy recovery Don.
