Wrought Iron Question.....UPDATE

Forgemonkey and anyone else that works with iron, I have a quick question.
I am having a curved porch railing made for my round deck, in the middle I am going to have them fab this fish pictured below. The guy selling me the job keeps telling me that it will be cheaper and I wont know the difference if they cut the fish out with a laser.
I want it to look hand forged, will a laser cut look as nice as a hand forged fish? Thanks.

I'd make them use square bar, cut, cope and weld.
The difference will be obvious and dramatic.
The over all look between the two is very different. Both methods are used to take a lot of work out of a decorative piece.

But one Question
Why a Carp ,,,Bottom Feeder???
That is Not You Todd[^][^]
Well now, it seems you came to the wrought place to get your question answered. [^][^][^][:D]
I sure did.
I'm with Woody on this, have 'em do a trout, not a carp.
i like the old school look of the carp, however I could be swayed.
How about a Muskie!!

WAY BETTER! Have 'em play the torch over it to give the metal that case hardened look and then lacquer it to keep it from rusting.

I had them leave the fish unpainted so I can do what neoblackdog said. Im going to torch it for color then laquer it.
Be careful with the 'torch',,,,,,,,it'll warp el fishie. And lacquer will yellow, crack and peel in time.
Best preservative I've used for outside is 50% linseed oil and mineral spirits with a little beeswax dissolved and a touch of Japan Drier. Nothing is permanent in the sun/outside and will have to be redone periodically.
Powder coating is good if you don't mind getting away from the hand made venue.
I watched a video on you tube on how to do it, would you say this is about it? He says light heat 180-200 degrees.

If I decide to spritz it with the acid and make it brown, would you say its a fairly idiot proof job? What are the biggest risks?
Would also like any opinions on weather I should do it too the water below the fish too.
Once more [:0]
Consider the 'wave' cutouts' ,,,,,,,,,,,you already have experience with copper, i. e. bracelets.
Try #10 or 12 solid copper wire forged/tapped into the cutouts,,,,,,,,,,the copper will give a nice contrast to the dark waves, eh ?????? [:)]
Dam this place is worth the price of admission!
I'm glad FM got us straightened out on the laquer business. I've done that a few times on interior type projects and they've held up real well (dumb ol' carpenter that I am), of course there was no UV to worry about.
One question for Forge, would it be so bad if the fish got a little warping due to heat? Would/could that maybe add a little bit of pizzaz to it?
BTW,,,,,,,,,there's three things that will send a 'blacksmith' to hell,,,
1. Striking cold iron,,,,,
2. Not charging enough,,,,,,and
3. PAINT,,,,,,,,,[:o)]
+100 on #3! If it's forged in our shop it will get a patina and automotive clear coat. That pannel shown, say if it was 6'X36" forged would be a min of 12k finished.
