Wrought Iron Question.....UPDATE

GuvamintCheeseGuvamintCheese Member Posts: 38,932

Forgemonkey and anyone else that works with iron, I have a quick question.

I am having a curved porch railing made for my round deck, in the middle I am going to have them fab this fish pictured below. The guy selling me the job keeps telling me that it will be cheaper and I wont know the difference if they cut the fish out with a laser.

I want it to look hand forged, will a laser cut look as nice as a hand forged fish? Thanks.

Most people couldn't tell the difference...but I can!...I have wraught iron on my upstairs balcony, and the stairways down in front of my house...The laser cut saves time, and the grinding of the welds takes even more time...I use to make "cast iron" wraught iron colunms..but the expense is way over the top today..If its all laser cut,it may work!.But not half and half...

Laser cut will start with sheet metal. The guage thickness will be fairly light.

I'd make them use square bar, cut, cope and weld.

The difference will be obvious and dramatic.

The edges will be cut really clean with a laser and won't have the wrought iron look unless you shot peen it or otherwise distress the surface. Between the time/$$$ spent drawing the plot for the cutter, cutting the plate, material used, and post-cut work on the item, I can't see this being cheaper than forging/welding it by hand.

Most likely will be cut from a single piece of flat stock (plate) and hammered to look hand formed or the pieces will be cut individually and then welded together.

The over all look between the two is very different. Both methods are used to take a lot of work out of a decorative piece.

You will get the same picture but it won't look the same as what you have pictured there. If the above photo is what you want, insist on it.My cents.

i like the old school look of the carp, however I could be swayed.

WAY BETTER! Have 'em play the torch over it to give the metal that case hardened look and then lacquer it to keep it from rusting.

I had them leave the fish unpainted so I can do what neoblackdog said. Im going to torch it for color then laquer it.

Be careful with the 'torch',,,,,,,,it'll warp el fishie. And lacquer will yellow, crack and peel in time.

Best preservative I've used for outside is 50% linseed oil and mineral spirits with a little beeswax dissolved and a touch of Japan Drier. Nothing is permanent in the sun/outside and will have to be redone periodically.

Powder coating is good if you don't mind getting away from the hand made venue.
I watched a video on you tube on how to do it, would you say this is about it? He says light heat 180-200 degrees.

Ok, the other option is just to have them paint it with the rest of the railing. You've got me a little nervous Mr. Monkey that I could ruin it.

If I decide to spritz it with the acid and make it brown, would you say its a fairly idiot proof job? What are the biggest risks?

Would also like any opinions on weather I should do it too the water below the fish too.

    Once more [:0]

Consider the 'wave' cutouts' ,,,,,,,,,,,you already have experience with copper, i. e. bracelets.

Try #10 or 12 solid copper wire forged/tapped into the cutouts,,,,,,,,,,the copper will give a nice contrast to the dark waves, eh ?????? [:)]

If I decide not to have it painted forgemonkey, how often will I have to heat it and retreat it?

    Lookin' good Mr. Cheese!
I'm glad FM got us straightened out on the laquer business. I've done that a few times on interior type projects and they've held up real well (dumb ol' carpenter that I am), of course there was no UV to worry about.
One question for Forge, would it be so bad if the fish got a little warping due to heat? Would/could that maybe add a little bit of pizzaz to it?

Thanks for asking that Neo. I am going to take his advice and get some test pieces and try out both coloring and the acid.

    1. Striking cold iron,,,,,

    2. Not charging enough,,,,,,and

    3. PAINT,,,,,,,,,[:o)]

+100 on #3! If it's forged in our shop it will get a patina and automotive clear coat. That pannel shown, say if it was 6'X36" forged would be a min of 12k finished.

I heated the iron until I got color and then backed off. Im not sure how I like it but the nice thing is I can always start over. I finished one with polyuerathane and one with fluid film to see which one prevents rust better. I had no warping.

Thanks forgemonkey, hope you win the raffle.
