new neighbors update

I had new neighbors move into the rental house next to me. Last night I was watching TV and getting ready for bed around midnight. I heard a couple guys hollering outside, my house is 400 feet from the road so I knew they where on my property. I grab my shotgun and 9mm and went around the back of the house to see what was going on. As they got close to my garage I hollered from around the corner that they where on private property and had better have a good reason for beinging here. They got all nervous and said they were looking for their dog that had run off. They moved in on saturday and I have never seen a dog at their house. I looked in the snow and did not see any dog tracks and told them to go home and look in the morning and not to come back on my propety at night.I talked to they owner of the house this morning and he doesn't think they have a dog.

What do you guys think? They never came back this morning

I talked to my brother this afternoon and he said that these guys have been seen in a few driveways the last couple of days. and that the sheriff will be talking to them and talking to people over the weekend.

They would'nt be hollering if they intended to steal from you. Go talk to them without the shotgun.

Teach the some common damn courtesy. If you have to go on someone's property, call, knock, or something. Somebody knocking around my house in the middle of the night will be met with a 12 gauge (and me in my boxers, the biggest deterrent) and the neighbors know that.

I think you did the right thing. I'd go get a 460 S&W and let them see that on your hip while you go kick some snow around. Then I'd go talk to them and make small talk, especially about the "new security system you had installed last week." To be feard AND respected is bliss.

Sounds like they may have been testing the waters to see what repsonse they would get. I would keep an eye open.
Just smile and say nothing, let them guess how much you know.

The Castle Doctrine in Texas would let you shoot them just for being on your property.

I think Tennessee has the same law.

I think vermont has the same law. I will have to check with my brother.

I think the shotgun and my Rotty runnig around will keep them away

That Rotty is your best preventative measure for sure.

The problem is that if they're really dedicated they could kill him.

I would keep a very close eye on those people.
