Boiled Peanuts

We spend a fair amount of time just outside the Charleston, S.C. area and became hooked on "Boiled Peanuts" that are redially available down there. I found a store that sells raw peanuts up here but can't get them to taste other than a boiled peanut! What seasonings go into the pot?

Sitting here with a big bowl of cajun style boiled peanut and watching the History channel. It does not get any better than this. Don

I love them but they are hard to eat.Try eating them with a tongue that dont move. Plus small peices fall between my teath and gum. After i get done i have to rinse my mouth out several times to get all the pieces out but they are worth it.

Not having a moving tongue is hard.

Used to eat them when I was in my 20's,....lost the taste for them I guess.

It's been many years since I had any.

Cant eat anything spicy since surgery. A pepperoni is to hot for me now. The 1/4 inch piece of tongue left is really sensitive. Ice cream is too cold.

I can't even imagine what it would be like to chew without a functioning tongue.

How do you move the food around in your mouth Dave?

This might sound like a weird question, but us Yankees aren't into boiled peanuts. I have probably 50 pounds of raw peanuts in the shell how do you prepare them?

The proper pronunciation seems to be 'bolled' peanuts.

Had a customer from SC offer me some, and it took me about 5 tries before I could figure out what he was saying.

They were OK, but there are about 100 better ways to eat peanuts.

Boil them in salted water, along with a ham hock or some smoked neck bones, for about 1.5-2hrs.
If their still crunchy, go another 30-45 min.
    Around here their called "Goober-Peas"..

Anything i eat i have to wash down with mashed potatoes or milk. What ever i eat just stays where it ends up then i put mashed potatoes in and push the rest down. It sucks but i cant fix it. On top of that my jaw is all jacked up from radiation so i cant chew but so many times before it hurts to bad to eat. Then i just drink milk. Its getting old.

I am a true blue 5th generation southerner, and I never liked boiled peanuts, but I do love home made peanut butter, and candy with peanuts,or just plain roasted...folks down here boil them in "crab-boil" or Cayenne pepper...My stopped at "Mr. Peanut" today and got me some jumbo cashews...[:D]

Never in my life have I seen, smelled, or eaten boiled peanuts. Wouldn't know where to look for them.

Dave, 30 years ago I lost the tip of my tongue in a bicycle accident. Trust me, it takes a while but the sensitivity gets better. My deal wasn't near as radical as yours, of course, but I know the sensation you're talking about. Seriously, I found that a beer or two helps.

    Hang in there.

I too love boiled peanuts. We have a farmer that grows them here in our home town. He plants over 500 acres of peanuts and its a sight to see the mexicans by the hundreds come in on one day and pick a field clean. His wife has a road side stand and sells them green or boiled. I buy a 50 pound bag and take them into work for the guys.
