A Random Act of Kindness

A guy went to lunch at a popular local diner. He was never there since he took a new job in the city about 2 years ago.

For some reason, today he thought he would try it out.

After ordering his lunch, 2 elderly ladies sat in the booth behind him. They were all excited about getting together for lunch. One's birthday was rcently, the other had recently gotten out of the hospital. When the waitress came, one of the ladies asked about using a gift certificate she had purchased earlier last year, one of those "spend $10 get $20" deals. The waitress said that she was sorry, but the certificate had expired at the end of 2011. The lady sounded a little concerned, and asked if she could at least get the $10 she had paid originally. Again, the answer was sorry, we can't honor it.

The guy in the booth heard this exchange. It was obvious that money was a factor here. He know that Lackawanna County had just announced that the 38% property tax increase proposed in the 2012 budget would not be reduced, and the City of Scranton was also having a tax increase.

He heard the two elderly ladies going back and forth as they decided what to have, as they were concerned about the cost of the lunch, and who was going to pay.

The guy's lunch came, and the waitress aked if they had made their choice. They both had the blue plate special, with coffee.

The guy's luch was very good, and has he heard the women talk, their voices reminded him of his Aunt Rita, long gone, but beloved and sorely missed.

When he went to pay for his lunch he asked for the check of the two elderly ladies. He told the waitress that their lunch was on him, and that he would also leave their tip for her with his tip.

He said please don't tell them until after I leave.

It was a dreary, rainy day in Scranton, but a random act of kindness brought some sunshine to two ladies.

I'm sure that "he"[:D] will reap many times that reward. Pretty much already has, I'd guess, just in the warm feeling it gives you to do a kindness such as this.

I did that one time long ago right after I retired from active duty when I saw a couple of really young soldiers (they looked like they had to shave at least once a week [;)]) at the airport restaurant fresh out of boot camp enroute to their first permanent base. It was fun to watch their faces from a distance when they were looking all around to try to find who had bought them their lunch. [:D][:D] Heck, they didn't eat much and it didn't cost me hardly anything. But, it kinda made my day and it was a kind of "passing of the baton" from an outgoing to an incoming GI. [:D]

Several years ago in December, a friend and I were having lunch in a local resturant and my friend struck up a conversation with a guy in a booth near us. The guy was happy to be out and about after getting out of the hospital even though he had to hobble around with a walker for awhile. As I got up to pay our bill, I picked up his bill, too, as I walked by his booth. He said, "Hey, you can't do that!" I said, "Well with that walker, I don't think you can catch me and kick my a**, Merry Christmas!" He smiled and said, "No, I guess not, Merry Christmas!" The good feeling I got from that was worth a LOT more than his lunch cost!
